Inspiring collective strength
The 7th Malaysia Agro Excellence Award honours individuals and organisations driving sustainability and innovation in Malaysia ’ s agricultural landscape

THE 7th Malaysia Agro Excellence Award 2024 , held at Dewan Fakulti Pertanian , Universiti Putra Malaysia ( UPM ), brought together agricultural leaders , policymakers , and innovators from across the nation .
Organised by Agriculture Protection & Development Association Malaysia ( APDAM ) and co-hosted by Agriculture Institute Malaysia ( AIM ), the event saw 10 exemplary winners honoured for their remarkable achievements in shaping the future of the industry , underscoring the diverse contributions driving Malaysia ’ s agricultural progress .
ACKNOWLEDGING EXCELLENCE
APDAM President Chai Siong Siew opened the event with a heartfelt welcome to guests and award recipients , acknowledging their vital contributions
“ Through resource integration and the dissemination of cuttingedge agricultural knowledge , we can revitalise society and build a prosperous , healthy , and green future for coming generations .
“ Each award recipient is not only a standard of excellence in their respective fields but also a driving force in advancing agricultural innovation on a national level .”
Chai also hoped their achievements would inspire greater collective strength and potential in the future , enabling the agricultural sector to seize new opportunities and tackle challenges ahead .
By taking these winners as role models , he envisioned showcasing the potential and resilience of Malaysia ’ s agriculture to the world while contributing valuable insights and practices to global agricultural innovation .
ADVANCING AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION
Among the celebrated figures was Professor Dr Fung Fwei Chong , whose groundbreaking contributions to sustainable farming practices earned him one of the evening ’ s honours .
In his speech , Fung reflected on the challenges and rewards of

working in the agricultural sector , saying : Innovation doesn ’ t just transform agriculture ; it ensures our survival .
“ The fusion of science , technology , and community collaboration has driven Malaysia ’ s agricultural advancements , urging more stakeholders to invest in research and development .”
Fung ’ s award recognised not only his professional achievements but also his role as a mentor and advocate .
He has worked closely with young scientists and farmers , fostering a culture of knowledgesharing and resilience in the face of challenges like climate change and resource scarcity .
Professor Dato ’ Dr Abdul Shukor Juraimi , a distinguished figure in agronomy and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at UPM , also addressed the attendees . He emphasised the critical role of innovation and research in driving the agricultural sector forward .
Speaking on the future of Malaysian agriculture , he said : “ Our agricultural sector must continue evolving , embracing modern technologies and practices to meet future challenges . Together , we can position Malaysia as a leader in global agricultural innovation .”
Shukor also stated : “ Collaboration across industries , academia , and communities is the cornerstone of meaningful progress . By working together , we can unlock the full potential of our nation ’ s agricultural resources .”
AGRICULTURAL GROWTH AND OPPORTUNITIES
Cham Owi Tong , vice-president of the Federation of Malaysia Chinese Commerce Association and Board Member of SME Corp , brought a practical perspective to the event .
In his address , he underscored the availability of financial and policy support tailored to the needs of small and medium enterprises ( SMEs ) in agriculture .
Cham highlighted several initiatives , including SME Corp ’ s Business Accelerator Programme 3.0 ( BAP 3.0 ), which provides targeted assistance to enhance SME capabilities . He also mentioned the Cradle Fund under MOSTI , offering up to RM600,000 in support for innovation-driven projects .
Cham stressed : “ Government loans and grants are always managed directly without intermediaries or agents ,
“ These programmes are vital in ensuring the long-term sustainability of our agricultural sector .”
The event culminated with the organising chairperson Grace Wong ’ s closing remarks , where she encouraged attendees to embrace the spirit of collaboration and innovation and reflected on the transformative journey of the Excellence Awards over the past seven years , highlighting the inspiring stories behind each winner .
“ It is these stories that fill us with hope for agriculture and remind us of the vitality of our land ,
“ With the applause of the future , let us celebrate the unwavering spirit of innovation and excellence in our agricultural community ,” she concluded .
As the curtains closed on the ceremony , The 7th Malaysia Agro Excellence Award 2024 served as a powerful reminder of the potential within the nation ’ s agricultural sector .
