While the African continent is projected to be a market of roughly four billion people by 2100 , with increased productivity and sustainable products , Malaysian palm oil can play a pivotal role in global food security .

Following the success in Egypt , Johari led a delegation to Istanbul for a Trade and Networking Dinner . Türkiye ’ s strategic location makes it an ideal hub for re-exporting Malaysian palm oil products to Europe , the Middle East , and the Caucasus .
“ Considering Turkiye ’ s strategic location as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East , Turkiye is positioned as an ideal hub for re-exporting Malaysian palm oil products to these regions .
“ Türkiye has been a steadfast partner , with Malaysia maintaining over 85 per cent market share in the Turkish palm oil market for nine years for several factors ,” Johari highlighted . He pointed out :
• Malaysia ’ s industry was committed to consistently delivering high-quality and sustainably-produced palm oil ,
adhering to international environmental standards . Turkiye ’ s reputation for producing highquality confectionery and oleochemical products further underscores the implementation of the MSPO , which aligns with the global trend towards sustainable products , boosting the appeal of Malaysian palm oil .
• Secondly , Malaysia was consistently expanding its market presence by promoting Malaysian palm-based derivatives , such as confectionery , home care products , and personal care products , into downstream sectors in Turkiye . The bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Türkiye , reinforced by the Malaysia- Türkiye Free Trade Agreement signed in August 2015 , is crucial . Last year , Türkiye imported over 884,000 tonnes of Malaysian palm oil .

Leveraging this geographical and economic relationship can further expand Malaysia ’ s market reach while strengthening trade relations between the two nations .
By working closely with global partners , Malaysia aims to ensure that its palm oil continues to thrive and support food security worldwide .
“ Our journey is about more than just trade ; it ’ s about building sustainable futures together ,” Johari concluded .
Malaysia ’ s agricommodity commitment
MALAYSIA is fully committed to meeting international standards to ensure the global marketability of its agricommodity products .
During the meeting with State Agriculture EXCO members on Aug 1 , Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the sector faced numerous challenges , including compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulation ( EUDR ), environmental preservation efforts like High Conservation Value ( HCV ), and tackling forced labour and human rights concerns .
The meeting brought together key figures , including Deputy Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin and representatives from various agencies , to discuss the future of Malaysia ’ s agricommodity sector .
A central theme of the discussions was the need to enhance cooperation , programmes , and activities within the sector . The meeting underscored the sector ’ s significant contribution to Malaysia ’ s economy , accounting for RM83.16 billion or around 5.31 per cent of the GDP in 2023 .
“ This sector is not only a financial powerhouse but also a crucial element in the nation ’ s efforts to eradicate poverty by generating employment and promoting equity ,” said Johari .

Recognising the sector ’ s importance , the Federal and State governments were called to collaborate closely on these issues .
“ To safeguard Malaysia ’ s agricommodity market on a global scale , it is imperative to establish effective strategies that ensure conformity to international sustainability standards .
“ The increasing emphasis on deforestation , land ownership , traceability and decent labour practices in recent trade negotiations has underscored the necessity of strict compliance with these standards ,” said Johari .
Throughout the meeting , there was a shared understanding that maintaining high standards is essential for the sector ’ s future . Attendees agreed that addressing these issues is critical to sustaining the agricommodity sector ’ s success .
With a focus on sustainable practices and high standards , Malaysia aims to ensure that its agricommodity products remain competitive internationally .
The discussion ended with a unanimous determination to maintain these standards , guaranteeing that Malaysia ’ s agricommodity sector will continue to flourish and effectively compete on the global stage . – @ AGROBiz
