AS Merdeka approaches, the nation prepares for parades, gatherings, and tables full of food. It ' s a time for celebration, but also a moment to think about what happens when the plates are cleared.
Every year, the festive season leaves us with a surplus of food, much of which ends up in the bin.
In a country that still imports a significant portion of its food, this waste has a direct impact on food security. It also disrespects the countless hours our farmers, fishermen, and agropreneurs put into producing that food. Let ' s show them the respect they deserve.
From planting seeds to harvesting crops, from raising livestock to transporting produce, the agriculture sector works tirelessly to feed us. Wasting their hard work is a loss we can avoid.
Instead of letting surplus food go to waste, why not redirect it to where it ' s needed most? Shelters, orphanages, and community kitchens are always looking for contributions, and even simple acts like sharing with neighbours can make a difference. It ' s a joyous opportunity to connect with our community and share the abundance of the season.
By doing this, we, as a community, can help those struggling with hunger while also honouring the people behind our food supply. Each of us has the power to make a difference.
This Merdeka, let ' s celebrate in a way that strengthens our sense of community and respect for the land that sustains us. Cook wisely, save what you can, and share what you can ' t keep.
Because true independence isn ' t just about flying the Jalur Gemilang- it ' s about ensuring that every Malaysian has access to enough.
That ' s the kind of freedom worth protecting.
