Malaysia reinforces its commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for its wildlife
MA LAYSIA ’ S unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in the government ’ s decision to preserve the nation ’ s forest cover . By halting the expansion of oil palm plantations into forested areas , Malaysia is taking a significant step towards a sustainable future .
Currently , Malaysia boasts 54 per cent forest cover , and the government is determined to maintain at least 50 per cent as part of its broader sustainability goals .
Plantation and Commodities Minister Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said a significant part of this strategy was the government ’ s focus on enhancing biodiversity through reforestation and protecting endangered species like the orangutan through conservation programmes and strict regulations on land use .

Sustainable rubber practices spotlighted
THE long-term success of Malaysia ’ s rubber industry hinges on sustainable practices , said Plantation and Commodities Deputy Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin .
During a visit to the manufacturing facility of latex mattress producer Getha ( 1969 ) Sdn Bhd , Chan praised the company for its active role in promoting sustainability within the industry .
Chan ’ s visit to Getha aligns with broader efforts to enhance the value of Malaysian rubber products by diversifying into high-value segments .
Recently , the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities ( KPK ) announced that the production of new products is expected to boost rubber output in the country significantly . This initiative aims to increase the income of local rubber tappers and strengthen Malaysia ’ s position in the global market .
In line with the national agenda , Chan reaffirmed the ministry ’ s commitment to supporting initiatives that meet global standards and consumer expectations .
“ The visit was an important

step in aligning industry goals with national sustainability policies , ensuring that Malaysia ’ s rubber sector not only prospers but also leads in responsible practices ,” he stated .
Getha ’ s dedication to sustainability is reflected throughout its production chain . With facilities spanning over one million square feet , Getha can produce 600 tonnes of raw latex each month , translating to an annual output of 7,200 tonnes - equivalent to tapping approximately 10 million rubber trees monthly . The company ’ s scale of production underscores its leadership in ecoconscious manufacturing .
Discussions during the visit guarding our forest cover because it plays a crucial role in biodiversity . The orangutan , among other protected species , is a priority in our conservation efforts ,” Johari highlighted .
This move aligns with the government ’ s broader efforts to counter negative perceptions of the palm oil industry , particularly those stemming from
centred on improving the quality of Malaysia ’ s natural rubber through sustainable methods and raising the country ’ s rubber standards .
Both parties emphasised the importance of aligning with evolving global regulations , particularly the EU Deforestation Regulation ( EUDR ).
By focusing on both innovation and sustainability , Getha not only reinforces its industry leadership but also supports Malaysia ’ s broader objectives to diversify and increase the value of its rubber exports .
“ This visit underscores the increasing importance of sustainable practices in the local rubber industry ,” Getha remarked , emphasising their commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing .

Western nations .
The industry has often been targeted with accusations of unsustainability and environmental harm , but Johari stressed that these claims are baseless .
“ We remain committed to dispelling the misinformation surrounding our palm oil industry ,” he noted .
He emphasised that the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil ( MSPO ) certification was mandatory for all producers , from large estates to smallholders .
A GLOBAL ASSURANCE
The MSPO certification has emerged as a crucial tool in assuring the global market of the sustainability and quality of Malaysian palm oil . This is particularly important as over 80 per cent of the country ’ s palm oil revenue comes from exports , making it essential to maintain international confidence in the industry .
“ The MSPO scheme is essential in convincing buyers that our palm oil products are both sustainable and of high quality ,” Johari said .
Despite the challenges , Malaysia ’ s palm oil industry remains a vital economic driver , contributing significantly to the national economy .
The sector accounts for three per cent of the country ’ s gross domestic product ( GDP ), generating over RM100 billion in export revenue and creating approximately one million jobs across the country .
For instance , the industry supports local communities , provides employment opportunities , and contributes to infrastructure development .
In Sabah alone , the landscape is dominated by 1.5 million hectares of oil palm plantations .
Johari ’ s message is clear - the future of Malaysia ’ s palm oil industry will not be at the expense of its forests and biodiversity . Malaysia is committed to ensuring that the industry ’ s growth is sustainable and does not compromise the country ’ s natural resources .
“ We have informed the industry that no new developments in forest areas will be tolerated . Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering , and we will continue to lead by example in this regard ,” Johari concluded .
