SEDA Malaysia sees potential collaborations with Dubai ’ s sustainable energy agencies
Launching ceremony of Sustainable Energy & Natural Resources Week at Malaysia Pavilion .
Visiting Dubai Electricity and Water ( DEWA ) Pavilion .
MALAYSIA ’ S participation in Expo 2020 Dubai proves the country ’ s great interest in championing sustainability . Malaysia Pavilion at the event , with the theme Energising Sustainability , captures the nation ’ s commitment and direction for sustainable development , which balances socioeconomic progress and environmental concerns .
To address climate change , sustainability , and environmental issues , Malaysia has adopted a resilient , low-carbon , resourceefficient , and socially inclusive framework in its administration .
The theme “ Sustainable Energy and Natural Resources ” was highlighted at Malaysia Pavilion during the 18th week of the expo . The week was led by the then Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources ( KeTSA ) and its agency Yayasan Hijau Malaysia ( YaHijau ).
Among programmes and activities during the Sustainable Energy Natural Resources Week were :
• Highlighting Malaysia ’ s sustainable energy initiatives to guide the implementation of sustainable energy developments and initiatives in Malaysia ;
• A sharing platform for delegates on best
Visiting Emirates National Oil Company ( ENOC ) Pavilion . practices , opportunities , and challenges in developing and implementing sustainable energy ;
• Trade business opportunities for companies ;
• Site visit to other pavilions at the expo ;
• Collaboration and networking session . Recognising the importance of the Sustainable Energy Development Authority ( SEDA ) Malaysia in sustainable energy space , KeTSA invited the agency to participate in the event during the 18th week from Jan 31-Feb 5 , 2022 .
SEDA was represented by its Chief Strategy Officer , Mohammad Nazri Mizayaudin , Ts . Edisham Mohd Sukor , Director of the Market Operations division , and Mohd Shah Hambali Arifin , Deputy Director of Technical Development and Facilitation .
SEDA SUPPORTS MALAYSIA PAVILION
Dubai EXPO 2020 became a platform for SEDA to show its support to the Malaysia Pavilion during the 18th week of the expo , in line with the theme of Sustainable Energy and Natural Resources . The week also offered stakeholders , especially companies involved , to gather and share knowledge about sustainable energy .
SEDA ' s participation during the 18th week also opened opportunities for the government agency to collaborate with leading sustainable energy agencies in Dubai , namely Dubai Electricity and Water Authority ( DEWA ) and Emirates National Oil Company ( ENOC ).
Some potential collaborations between
SEDA and DEWA include :
• Site-practical training for SEDA staff at DEWA ’ s research and development
Attending a session entitled Young Minds for Healthy Lives on A Healthy Planet at Swiss Pavilion .
( R & D ) facility
• Sharing the facility for testing and studying the performance of solarrelated products ( performance test )
• Knowledge transfer for matters related to sustainable energy , including technology and hydrogen
• International training cooperation related to sustainable energy , including the dispatch of experts ( SEDA-DEWA )
• Developing and updating existing training modules at SEDA Aside from DEWA and ENOC Pavilions , the delegates also visited Bosnia and Herzegovina Networking Event and Sweden Pavilion . They also attended public seminars , namely “ Young Minds for Healthy Lives on A Healthy Planet ” at the Swiss Pavilion , “ Croatia Future of Medical Education ”, and “ Silesia – the land of opportunity , business gateway to Europe .”
PROMOTING SEDA ’ S INITIATIVES
In addition , Expo 2020 Dubai serves as a medium for SEDA to promote its programmes and initiatives , such as Feed-in Tariff ( FiT ), Net Energy Metering ( NEM ), SAVE 3.0 , and Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap ( MyRER ).
Throughout the 18th week at Malaysia Pavilion during the expo , three pocket talk sessions were held involving companies such as PETRONAS , Concord Group , and Gading Kencana , and 17 business matchings with potential investors were recorded .
The week also witnessed the MoUs exchange between Concord Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd and Innio Jenbacher GMBH , as well as Gading Kencana Sdn Bhd and March Global LLC . – @ Green
Achieving sustainability through partnerships
GREEN Technology Application for the Development of Low Carbon Cities ( GTALCC ) is a five-year project beginning in mid-2017 that removes barriers to integrated low-carbon urban planning and development in selected Malaysian cities .
This initiative is achieved through policy support , awareness & institutional capacity , and demonstration projects .
It is a United Nations Development Programme ( UNDP ) - Global Environment Facility ( GEF ) project that is implemented by the then Ministry of Environment and Water ( KASA ) with the Sustainable Energy Development Authority ( SEDA ) Malaysia as its lead consultant .
In conjunction with the 2022 United Nations Conference on Climate Change ( COP27 ) in Sharm El Sheikh , Egypt , GTALCC , SEDA Malaysia , and Iskandar Regional

Development Authority ( IRDA ) jointly organised a side event entitled Iskandar Malaysia : Empowering Sustainability with Partners on Nov 12 , 2022 , at Malaysia Pavilion .
The side event highlighted the climate and sustainability initiatives and achievements by IRDA delivered together with all the partners in Iskandar Malaysia from the government and private sectors , research institutions , international agencies , and NGOs .
The session was moderated by Kamisah Mohd Ghazali , Lead , Resilient Environment of IRDA , and featured other prominent experts , including Dato ’ Dr Badrul Hisham Bin Kassim , Chief Executive of IRDA .
During the session , Chau Loon Wai , Co-Director , UTM-Low Carbon Asia Research Centre ( UTM-LCARC ), highlighted the topic titled Partnerships for Accelerating City and

Regional-level Transition into Net Zero Emission . The discussion on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion- Multilevel Partnership in Delivering Sustainable Iskandar Malaysia was then presented by Thanam Visvanathan-Suresh , Chairwomen of the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion ( GESI ) Consultative Group .
The session also witnessed the discussion on Children and Youth at the Heart of Climate Action by Nasha Lee , Climate Change & Environment Specialist at UNICEF Malaysia . Dr Junichi Fujino , Program Director , Integrated Sustainability Centre ( ISC ) Institute for Global Environmental Strategies ( IGES ), Japan , also delivered a presentation entitled Japan-Malaysia collaboration

to develop low-carbon cities in Malaysia .
Norizal Khushairi Mohamad Zamri , National Project , Manager GTALCC , SEDA , presented the topic of Enabling Low Carbon Cities through Partnerships to the audience .
Malaysia ’ s participation in COP27 indicated its commitment in moving towards a carbon-neutral nation . Malaysian delegates also had the opportunity to attend sessions hosted by other countries throughout the conference . – @ Green
