Petronas , Southeast Asian leaders discuss net zero pathway

Attaining sustainability targets needs a carefully-planned transition and concerted action from all stakeholders

PETRONAS recently sponsored the second of a three-part multistakeholder forum series , “ Southeast Asia ’ s Net Zero Pathways : More Energy , Less Emissions ,” to continue green partnership discussions ahead of Energy Asia 2023 .

The debate helps SEA ’ s energy actors , legislators , financiers , technology owners , innovators , and other important proponents hasten toward Asia ’ s net zero carbon emissions . The second debate , moderated by Energy Asia knowledge partner CERAWeek by S & P Global , included Indonesia , Thailand , Philippines , Singapore , Vietnam , Brunei , and Malaysia .
Petronas President and CEO Datuk Tengku Muhammad Taufik said : “ Given the specific challenges encountered by diverse rising economies across Southeast Asia , attaining our sustainability targets needs a carefully planned transition and concerted action from all stakeholders . These discussions allow public and private parties to share their knowledge . I ’ m hopeful that Energy Asia 2023 will help us develop just and responsible routes to a lower-carbon future .

On Dec 14 , 2022 , the European Union and Malaysia signed the EU-Malaysia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement ( PCA ) in Brussels .
This agreement will increase the scope for mutually beneficial cooperation in many policy areas , such as the environment , energy , climate change , transport , trade , employment and social affairs , human rights , agriculture , nonproliferation , counter-terrorism , the fight against organised crime , and migration .
Vice-President / High Representative Josep Borrell stated : “ The European Union and Malaysia are deepening their connections to collaborate more closely . The Partnership and Cooperation Agreement consolidate and broadens contacts in areas of mutual interest .”

Vice Chairman and CERAWeek conference chair , stated : “ This is a crucial roundtable for synchronising agendas and viewpoints . Regional cooperation and interconnectedness become essential for moving forward .”
Dr Atul Arya , S & P Global Chief Energy Strategist , moderated the conversation on technology , regulations , and investments to reduce emissions without compromising energy access and cost .
Arya said Asia ’ s energy shift would use regionally appropriate technology and regulations . “ Global one-size-fits-all is not practical and will have unexpected consequences . Instead , successful strategies must be adapted to the region and countries ’ positions .”
The first multi-stakeholder debate focused on the regional energy transition framework , how these particular applications would affect each country , and the spectrum of ways to decarbonise the energy

Indo-Pacific : EU-Malaysia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement

The signing ceremony signifies the conclusion of negotiations that began in October 2010 . The Agreement was initiated on Apr 6 , 2016 , at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia in Putrajaya by the principal negotiators of the European Union and Malaysia .
After ratification by EU member States and Malaysia , the PCA will enter into force . value chain . The debate noted that a fair and just energy transition requires significant investment .
According to S & P Global ’ s regional data , power generation accounted for 37 per cent of energyrelated emissions , followed by transportation ( 29 per cent ), industry ( 19 per cent ), other sectors ( nine per cent ), residential and commercial ( four per cent ), and hydrogen generation ( two per cent ).
The region is projected to emit 4,500 MMTCO2e by 2050 , raising the global temperature by 2.4 ° C . S & P Global ’ s model expects a substantial fall in greenhouse gas equivalents by 2030 with effective emission reduction initiatives .
As the Asian nations meet to end the dialogue series in early December , CERAWeek by S & P Global will moderate the penultimate session leading up to Energy Asia , scheduled for Jun 26 – 28 , 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre .
The PCA signing ceremony marks the closure of negotiations which began in October 2010 .
Josep Borrell Fontelles , Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy , represented the EU . In contrast , Petr Fiala , Prime Minister of the Czech Republic , represented its member States . Malaysia was represented by Senator Dato ’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir , its Foreign Minister .

Eni , Euglena , and Petronas look into biorefinery in Malaysia

ENI , EUGLENA , and Petronas want to build and run a biorefinery in Southeast Asia ’ s largest integrated refinery and petrochemical complex , Pengerang Integrated Complex ( PIC ).
The three partners are assessing technical and economic viability for a 2023 investment decision and 2025 facility completion . Petronas ’ integrated value chain and PIC ’ s utilities will power the biorefinery . The new refinery will provide sustainable global shipping .
Diesel trains , ships , and cars need biorefinery SAF and HVO . Flexible production accommodates energy growth .
From 650,000 tonnes of raw materials , the biorefinery produces 12,500 barrels of SAF , HVO , and bio-naphtha . Used vegetable oils , animal fats , vegetable oil manufacturing waste , and biomass - including mid-term microalgae oils - will not compete with food chain raw materials .
Eni and Honeywell UOP developed EcofiningTM for the biorefinery .
Eni will decarbonise by 2050 . Biofuels decarbonise quickly , thus , Eni uses transportation . HVO , mostly produced by Eni in Italy and second in Europe , can be added to diesel fuel or used alone in authorised engines : 100 per cent-pure HVO reduces fossil fuel lifetime CO2 emissions by 60 – 90 per cent , depending on feedstock . Eni Biojet SAF decarbonises aviation . Gela will produce 150 thousand tonnes of Eni Biojet from 2024 to meet Italy ’ s 2025 blending mandate .
Euglena , Japan ’ s foremost biotechnology-driven , sustainability-focused growth firm , won Prime Minister Prizes in 2015 ( Start-up ) and 2021 . ( SDGs award ). R & D has enhanced healthcare , biofuel , and Euglena microalgae output .
Japan ’ s first renewable jet and diesel fuel demonstration facility was Euglena ’ s in 2018 . Euglena first delivered domestic SAF to Narita International Airport ’ s hydrant system and government aircraft .
“ This initiative represents a huge milestone for our Biofuel firm and our ambition to increase biofuel usage and decarbonisation in Japan ,” stated Euglena founder and president Mitsuru Izumo . I ’ m excited to better the future with top experts .”
“ As Petronas continues to chart its course into the biofuels space , decarbonising and diversifying its product portfolio to cater for the rising global demand for sustainable solutions , this collaboration is momentous to unlock the partners ’ respective strengths and jointly strengthen our position in biofuels in Malaysia and around the world ,” said Ahmad Adly Alias , Vice President , Refining , Marketing and Trading of Petronas ’ Downstream business . – @ Green
