Giving voice to the youth

Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah believes young leaders play critical roles in addressing the climate crisis

IN the face of the escalating challenges posed by climate change , urgent and decisive climate action has become imperative - the participation of youth , whose unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship is increasingly evident .

As ambassadors of change , the youth are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but the catalysts of today ’ s climate resilience .
In her address at the United Nations ’ 28th Climate Change Conference ( COP 28 ) on Dec 1 , 2023 , Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah passionately discussed the urgent need for climate action and emphasised why the youth should be at the forefront of this global endeavour . Her speech highlighted young leaders ’ critical role in addressing the climate crisis .
“ We are in the midst of a climate crisis . The world is getting warmer , resulting in natural disasters , weather extremes , food insecurity and global anxiety . This is why we must be here together to discuss these issues and how we can save our planet ,” said Tunku Azizah .

“ Today , I want to talk about a young man who believes in unity for action and delivery . A man who is passionate about climate action , preservation and conservation . He is my son , HRH the Crown Prince Hassanal of Pahang , who has inspired me .”
Tunku Azizah mentioned that Hassanal , with the support of His Majesty the King , persuaded the Pahang government to commit to being net zero by 2030 . He explained that Pahang would be net surplus by 2050 , citing the high forest cover and low emissions
