Is climate change to blame ?

EXTREME rainfall has caused deadly flooding in western Germany and Belgium , prompting many in Europe to wonder if climate change is to blame .

Climate change , scientists have long predicted , will result in heavier rains . However , scientists said that determining its role in last week ’ s torrential rains would take at least several weeks of research .
“ Floods happen all the time , and they are random events , like rolling the dice . However , we ’ ve altered the odds of rolling the dice ,” according to Ralf Toumi , a climate scientist at Imperial College London ,
According to scientists , the rising average global temperature – which is now about 1.2 degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial average – makes heavy rainfall more likely .
Warmer air holds more moisture , so more water will eventually be released . Cologne , Germany , received more than 15 centimetres ( six inches ) of rain ( at the time of writing ).
“ When we have this heavy rainfall , the atmosphere is almost like a sponge - you squeeze a sponge , and the water flows out ,” Reuters quoted Johannes Quaas , professor of Theoretical Meteorology at Leipzig University , as saying .
According to climate scientists , a one-degree increase in average global temperature increases the atmosphere ’ s capacity to hold water by seven per cent , increasing the likelihood of heavy rainfall events .
Other factors , such as local geography and air pressure systems , influence how specific areas are impacted .
Such floods , according to a German meteorologist , have not occurred in 500 or even 1,000 years .
Extreme downpours , such as those experienced in Germany , are one of the most visible signs that the climate is changing due to warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions .
According to studies , they are becoming more common for a simple reason : a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture , resulting in more powerful rainfall .
Although extreme weather events are becoming more common worldwide – whether wildfires in the American West or more powerful hurricanes in the Caribbean – the floods that swept through Germany , Belgium , Switzerland , and the Netherlands were virtually unheard of , according to meteorologists and German officials .
Nonetheless , they were not unexpected . That ’ s the price to pay for neglecting the environment .
