Malaysia ’ s cleaner energy goal
Country ' s energy transition is moving progressively from fossil fuel to RE
MALAYSIA is switching from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources . To become carbonneutral , the country continuously adopts renewable energy ( RE ) and encourages low carbon practices across sectors and economic activities .
According to Energy and Natural
Resources ( KeTSA ) Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan , Malaysia ’ s energy transition is moving progressively , albeit cautiously , from fossil fuel to RE .
“ The Electricity Supply Industry ( ESI ) traditionally relies on natural gas and coal . Peninsular Malaysia gets 90 per cent of its electricity from fossil fuels ,” said Takiyuddin .
“ Due to its reliance on fossil fuels , the energy sector contributes the most to carbon emissions and environmental impacts .”
Takiyuddin said the need to switch to RE was imminent given the Paris Agreement 2015 and the decarbonisation agenda . Implementing the Five-Fuel Policy and Renewable Energy Act drove the transition from fossil fuels to RE , he said .
