Organised by SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd ( SEDCE ) and its partners , the BETC 2024 conference facilitated in-depth discussions on energy transition , bringing together stakeholders from various sectors .

Reflecting on the discussions of energy transition and climate change over the years in international conferences like Kyoto , UN Climate Change Conference COP21 in Paris and COP28 in Dubai , it becomes evident that there is an urgent need to mitigate carbon emissions and shift away from fossil fuels to combat global warming .

“ They still mention fossil fuel , but they recognise that it ’ s the beginning and the end of fossil fuel ,” said Abang Johari concerning the evolving stance on fossil fuels .

It signifies an increasing awareness of the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and further emphasises the critical role of alternative energy resources .

NATURAL ADVANTAGE

Fortunately , Sarawak boasts a natural advantage in carbon sequestration and renewable energy production thanks to its 62 per cent forest cover and abundant water resources .

Nonetheless , Sarawak is exploring several strategies , including harnessing hydropower from its rivers and implementing

innovative methods such as biomass and wind energy to embrace diverse clean energy resources .

Technological advancements are crucial in realising the full potential of clean energy and lowering the cost of production .

Abang Johari underlined its significance : “ We have a mini plant producing hydrogen , though the cost is high .”

Despite the uncertainties and challenges , he stressed the necessity of taking risks .

“ Sometimes you must take the risk . Nothing is simple . We know we have the resources , so we take the risk .”

Additionally , Sarawak ’ s commitment to adopting clean energy solutions is evident

in the implementation of fuel cell technology in its public transportation system , Autonomous Rapid Transport System ( ART ), where hydrogen is utilised as its fuel source .

“ We are the first in this region to use hydrogen for public transport .”

That said , the investment in hydrogen production reflects Sarawak ’ s confidence in achieving sustainable energy goals .

Paramount to this initiative is the collaboration with entities like SEDCE , Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd , Sarawak Metro and international corporations such as Samsung Engineering , Lotte Chemical , and Korea National Oil Cor-

poration ( H2biscus Green Hydrogen project ).

In addressing the delegates before the conference began , Abang Johari added : “ I hope this conference will explore further collaboration between the players , particularly in terms of logistics , given that logistical challenges such as hydrogen transportation and infrastructure development require more collaborative efforts to foster an environment favourable to investment and innovation .”

Sarawak aims to mitigate carbon emissions and realise its potential as a regional leader in clean energy production and distribution through strategic policies , technological innovation , and collaborative partnerships .

THE Borneo Energy Transition Conference ( BETC ) 2024 came to fruition in a gathering marked by dedication and determination , a testament to the tireless efforts of a committed team .

SEDC Energy Chief Executive Officer Robert Hardin spearheaded this endeavour , whose vision for a sustainable future guided the proceedings .
