The plight of the Malayan tiger

PIC SOURCE : MALAYSIA ANIMAL
ASSOCIATION
THE Malayan tiger , a majestic symbol of Malaysia ’ s natural heritage , teeters on the brink of extinction . Each loss reverberates through our ecosystems , with a population dwindling to 150-200 tigers .
Disturbingly , the recent spate of road kills , the third since November 2023 , highlights a pressing crisis : our highways are becoming death traps for these critically endangered animals .
These tragic incidents expose a significant flaw in our wildlife management policies . The government should halt the construction of new highways that cut through crucial forest reserves , especially those home to known tiger populations . Instead , the focus should be on preserving and improving forest connectivity .
Designating specific wildlife crossing areas and installing clear signage to alert drivers of the high potential for animal crossings are essential steps in this direction . How often do we see such signs on our significant highways now ? Rarely , if ever .

As the tigers ’ habitats shrink and degrade , the likelihood of fatal encounters with vehicles only increases . We cannot afford to ignore this . It ’ s time we stood up for the Malayan tiger , a keystone species integral to our ecological balance .
One innovative solution is the construction of overhead animal crossings . Such structures have proven effective in other parts of the world .
For instance , California ’ s Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing , set for completion in 2025 , will provide a safe passage for various species across a busy freeway , including mountain lions and bobcats . If we adopt similar initiatives , we can offer our tigers a fighting chance .
The future of the Malayan tiger is in our hands . Our responsibility is to ensure these magnificent creatures can roam safely and freely in their natural habitats . Let ’ s take action now because if we lose the tiger , we lose an essential part of our natural heritage .
Together , we can make a significant impact .
