Committed to sustainable palm oil

Malaysia ’ s palm oil industry is a prime example of ESG adaptation

DEVELOPING countries face unique challenges in implementing Environmental , Social , and Governance ( ESG ) compliance .

Investment , Trade , and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz recently highlighted the proactive efforts of the Malaysian palm oil industry , which continually adapts under international pressure to be environmentally sustainable .
Malaysia ’ s palm oil industry is not just committed to ESG adaptation , it is a pioneer in this field . It diligently follows the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil ( MSPO ) certification and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil ( RSPO ) guidelines , setting a high standard for the global palm oil industry .
These standards enforce stringent “ No Deforestation , No Peat , No Exploitation ” ( NDPE ) policies and zero-burning protocols , reflecting the industry ’ s commitment to sustainable practices .
Despite the regulatory hurdles , the Malaysian palm oil sector remains steadfast and proactive . It continuously improves labour standards , ensures fair employment practices , and enhances
sustainability initiatives , demonstrating its unwavering commitment to sustainability .
The oil palm tree ’ s efficient land use exemplifies sustainable agriculture . It produces the highest yield per hectare among oil crops .
Despite occupying only 5.5 per cent of cultivated land for oils and fats globally , oil palm contributes up to 32 per cent of total output , showcasing its unparalleled productivity .
Malaysia has ratified the International Labour Organisation ’ s Forced Labour Convention on labour standards . This is a significant step that demonstrates Malaysia ’ s commitment to upholding workers ’ rights and eliminating labour abuses . The comprehensive national policies implemented to support this commitment are enforced by the Malaysian courts , ensuring their effectiveness .
Significant advancements in ESG compliance are not just a possibility , they are a reality . Large plantation companies are maintaining high sustainability ratings and making substantial progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions , paving the way for a more sustainable

future in Malaysia .
This demonstrates the industry ’ s resolve to align with global sustainability benchmarks and address regulatory challenges , especially those from the EU .
The Malaysian Bar supports the national policy of improving sustainability and reducing emissions .
President Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab advocated for formal emissionsrelated national laws , which would create a clear , enforceable framework for ESG compliance .
Such legislation could improve corporate and industry practices by setting minimum standards , requiring regular reporting , mandating transparency and accountability , and enforcing compliance .
This is particularly crucial for industries like palm oil , which face intense
scrutiny and ESG demands from international markets .
Countries with stringent climate laws often see improved ESG ratings , as these laws drive systemic changes contributing to sustainable development goals .
By aligning more closely with global standards , Malaysia could enhance its attractiveness to foreign investors , prioritising ESG compliance and positioning its industries as leaders in sustainability .
The Malaysian Bar plays a pivotal role in this green narrative . It enhances its members ’ legal expertise in ESG practices and actively advocates for sustainable policies . Through strategic capacity-building and education , the Bar equips a new generation of lawyers to advocate and implement practices that balance economic growth and environmental protection .
As Malaysia advances its ESG agenda , the synergy between legal frameworks and sustainable practices creates a beacon of hope .
This commitment demonstrates that the right to life and the right to a sustainable environment can go hand in hand , setting a global standard for sustainability and social responsibility .
