Engaging with private sectors
As part of SEDA ’ s role in exploring more potentials of RE technology and new resources , it continuously engages with private sectors proposing new technologies and facilitating them within the current context and way forward .
SEDA ’ s quarterly trade journal , dubbed as the Sustainable Energy Malaysia ( SEM ), also serves as a platform for SEDA to interact with its stakeholders from private sectors on the latest developments of Malaysia ’ s SE sector and alert them on the available services extended by the Authority .
“ Also , the FiT mechanism , enabled by the RE Act [ Act 725 ], was introduced to provide business confidence and security among industry players . It includes private investors , developers and bankers in the domestic market .
“ Since its implementation , the sector witnessed a significant growth of RE mix in the grid energy distribution .”
Throughout the years , SEDA effectively engaged all stakeholders from both public and private sectors through sustainable energy programmes , especially during unprecedented and challenging times .
Post-pandemic outlook
Lukanisman noted that due to the Covid-19 pandemic , SEDA , as the implementing agency of numerous RE and EE policies and programmes , did not have the luxury to keep its activities and operations on hold as it was crucial for Malaysia ’ s RE agenda .
“ The outlook for the RE industry
WHILE THE Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap 2035 is a strategic roadmap developed by SEDA to pave the way towards realising the national RE target towards the low-carbon power sector , it will also address the energy trilemma of economic growth , energy security and environmental sustainability .
“ The Roadmap ( formerly known as Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap 2035 ) aims to strike a balance between environmental targets , preserving affordability and economic benefits . It is also to maintain the security and high reliability of the grid system operation , to deliver reliable and affordable green power to all ,” said SEDA Chairman Lukanisman Awang Sauni .
The outlook for the RE industry remains challenging , but the prospects are bright as the world steps up its energy transition efforts to address climate change and greenhouse gas emission issues .”
remains challenging , but the prospects are bright as the world steps up its energy transition efforts to address climate change and greenhouse gas emission issues .”
Following the recent announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that Malaysia was committed to Carbon Neutral by the earliest 2050 , Lukanisman said : “ In realising the aspiration , concerted efforts by relevant sectors including urban development , transportation and total primary energy consumption at large need to be addressed .
“ A more cross-sectoral engagement and initiatives are in time to collectively deliver sectoral ’ s aspirations towards common goals – Carbon Neutral .”

Roadmap to address the energy trilemma

As such , Lukanisman hopes the Roadmap , scheduled for publication this year , will optimise the socio-economic benefits from the development of RE in Malaysia whilst positively contributing towards the global climate-change agenda in decarbonising the power sector for a better and greener future .
Lukanisman also acknowledged the contribution of stakeholders in the development of the Roadmap .
“ The stakeholders ’ valuable contributions and inputs are much appreciated , and indeed a crucial component to ensure the formulated strategies are realisable and able to unlock the desired outcome and the socio-economic benefits to the nation .”
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY Development Authority Malaysia ( SEDA ) leads by example in sustainable practices while granting approvals to more than 10,000 renewable energy installations in Malaysia .
“ SEDA leads by example in sustainable practise by installing Solar PV system at the headquarter office of the Authority located in Putrajaya ,” shared SEDA Chairman Lukanisman Awang Sauni .
“ In 2019 , SEDA installed a 16kW Solar PV system on the rooftop of Galeria PjH . This PV system will also link to the PV Monitoring System ( PVMS ) managed by the Authority .
“ Importantly , this PV project will be part of the Authority ’ s on-site training facility providing online data for analysis and opportunity to showcase PV for office application to visitors and training participants .”
The Solar PV system , he said , is installed based on the Self- Consumption ( SELCO ) mode as the bulk meter of the building will not support NEM configuration .
“ It is estimated that the 16kWp Solar PV system could generate about 19,200kWh / year with about 13,324.8kg of CO avoidance per year .”
Apart from that , SEDA is also embracing digitalisation-IR 4.0 , namely the usage of Microsoft Teams for virtual conferences , Microsoft Exchange Cloud , which reduces the operating expenses and increases the reliability of SEDA ’ s email system , Microsoft Sharepoint – a knowledge repository that can be shared among SEDA ’ s staff throughout the organisation and Integration e-FiT System which is the e-cash flow ( moving towards e-system for digitalisation ).
“ Through digitalisation , SEDA was able to reach out to various RE and EE sectors via virtual meetings and provide assistance when needed .
“ We also engaged numerous focus group discussions with key stakeholders , such as the relevant ministries and government agencies , to ensure that businesses can operate as usual during lockdowns .”
Empowering the youth
In alignment with the United Nations System ( UNS ), SEDA recognises youth ’ s key role in tackling climate change .
UNS works closely with youth-led and youth-focussed organisations worldwide to empower youth to take adaptation and mitigation actions and enhance effective participation of youth in climate change policy decision-making processes .
SEDA believes the youth-led initiatives have played an essential role in addressing the climate crisis , and there is a need to cultivate an environment for youth empowerment .
“ SEDA hosts the International Sustainable Energy Summit ( ISES ), which provides a strategic learning platform for industry players . The biennial summit is a knowledge-based platform explicitly focusing on renewable energy and energy demand management .
“ With the upcoming ISES , for the first time , SEDA shall be introducing a dedicated session focusing on youth because SEDA acknowledges the youth movement empowers the next generation of leaders who are accelerating the transition to a sustainable , equitable energy future .” – @ Green
