Korean touch for Sarawak H2biscus project
Three major Korean companies – POSCO , Lotte and Samsung – would be leading in the entire cycle of the project development
Petronas offers support for Sarawak ’ s first mega methanol plant
ONE of the world ’ s leading engineering , procurement , construction and project management companies , Samsung Engineering , has come up with H2biscus Project to develop a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Bintulu .
According to a statement by the Chief Minister ’ s Office , the Sarawak H2biscus Green Hydrogen / Ammonia Project will be developed and sponsored by a consortium consisting of Lotte Chemical , POSCO , Sarawak Economic Development Corporation ( SEDC )’ s subsidiary , SEDC Energy , and Samsung Engineering .
The project will produce 7,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for Sarawak usage , 600,000 tonnes of blue ammonia , 630,000 tonnes of green ammonia , and 460,000 tonnes of green methanol per year .
The statement said the feasibility study is expected to start this year . Meanwhile , the Front End Engineering Design ( FEED ) and EPC contracts are scheduled to be awarded in the following year .
The President and Chief Executive Officer of Samsung Engineering , Sungan Choi , presented the ‘ Malaysia Sarawak H2biscus Green Hydrogen / Ammonia Project ’ to the
South Korean government during the ‘ Announcement of Korea Government Hydrogen Economy & Society Development Strategy ’.
Choi , in his presentation , mentioned three major Korean companies - POSCO , Lotte Chemical and Samsung Engineering – would be leading in the entire cycle of the project development . It includes direct investment , construction , transportation and utilisation .
Choi also highlighted that the project would act as a model project for renewable energy exchange and hydrogen transportation between Korea and Malaysia , developing hydrogen-related standards in both nations .
According to the statement , Choi also shared the project ’ s wide range of environment-friendly products like green hydrogen , green and blue
PETRONAS LNG Ltd ., a subsidiary of PETRONAS , has entered an agreement with China ’ s Shenergy Group Company Limited to export three carbon-neutral liquefied natural gas ( LNG ) cargoes from the Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu , Sarawak .
Between October 2021 and March 2022 , Petronas will transport the first carbon-neutral LNG to China to Shenergy ’ s facilities in Shanghai . Petronas delivered its first carbonneutral LNG shipment to Japan last month .
Shamsairi Ibrahim , Petronas Vice President of LNG Marketing & Trading , said Petronas was proud to elevate their 15-year partnership with Shenergy , which now includes supplying carbon neutral LNG , reflecting their commitment to offering decarbonised LNG solutions to the market .

It also stated that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan led the State team to an online engagement session with the Korean consortium to learn more about the projects and their benefits to both Korea and Sarawak .
Meanwhile , in Bintulu , Samsung Engineering is working on the Sarawak Petchem methanol plant project , which is expected to produce 5,000 tonnes of methanol per day .
The company is focusing its efforts on becoming a ‘ Beyond EPC Green Solution Provider ,’ offering green infrastructure and energy optimisation services . The services are done through process analysis based on digital twin .

Following the initial long-term supply deal with its subsidiary Shanghai LNG Co ., Ltd . in 2006 , Shenergy remained a major LNG customer and partner for PETRONAS . PETRONAS maintained its position as Shenergy ’ s chosen LNG solutions supplier when the two companies signed a new 12-year term agreement last year .
PETRONAS Global Technical Solutions Sdn Bhd ( PGTSSB ) inked an agreement with Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd to provide advisory and technical support services for Sarawak ’ s first mega methanol plant .
Advisory on technical services , procurement and turnaround , and crucial operations and maintenance assistance for the Sarawak Methanol Project throughout its project execution and operation stages are all covered by the agreement .
It reflects Petronas ’ commitment to assisting Sarawak Petchem in completing the megaproject , following the latter ’ s vision of “ One Team , One Goal , One Spirit , Building Legacy ”.
The deal also represents another step forward in Petronas ’ and the State government ’ s long-standing partnership in Sarawak ’ s quest for growth , particularly in the downstream petrochemical industry .
Noor Ilias Mohd Idris , PGTSSB Board Chairman , said that Petronas was honoured to be the preferred energy and solutions partner of Sarawak Petchem in supporting the historic project for Sarawak ’ s oil and gas venture into the petrochemical sector .
He added Petronas was committed to helping facilitate Sarawak ’ s vision for their first mega methanol plant with their best-in-class technical and project delivery expertise .
“ PGTSSB ’ s local experts are of multiple technical disciplines with rich experience in similar projects in Malaysia , and they can contribute towards ensuring a sustainable pipeline of technical talents in Sarawak Petchem through knowledge transfer .”
Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS ( INSTEP ) is now offering Sarawak Petchem employees with tailored technical training in operations , maintenance , health , safety , and the environment .
In August , the first group of learners began virtual instructor-led instruction at INSTEP to begin their technical training .

Over a dozen heads of State , Indigenous leaders , and high-ranking UN officials attended the event , which resulted in new funding promises from countries and international organisations to help address the biodiversity budget gap .
Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid , Ambassador and Science Advisor to the Campaign for Nature , and former Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia , said : “ I am pleased to see more funding committed to protected and conserved areas , and I look forward to seeing more ASEAN member states embracing the 30x30 global target .
