Malaysia ’ s green evolution

The National Energy Transition Roadmap ( NETR ) is a result of an inclusive decision-making

MALAYSIA is actively advancing its transition to a sustainable and green economy by developing the National Energy Transition Roadmap ( NETR ). The Ministry of Economy in Malaysia has created the NETR to accelerate the country ’ s shift from a traditional fossil fuel-based economy to a high-value green economy .

A workshop conducted on April 17 , 2023 , in conjunction with the development of NETR , facilitated over 100 engagements and consultations , showcasing a commitment to inclusive decision-making .
“ The strong presence of organisations like SEDA ( Sustainable Energy Development Authority ) Malaysia , Energy Commission , PETRONAS , Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation in the project team demonstrates a multi-stakeholder approach in this collaborative work ,” said SEDA Malaysia Chairman Ahmad Zairin Ismail .
“ The involvement of ministries , agencies , and the private sector , including representatives from Sabah and Sarawak in both the Steering Committee and
Technical Committee , further reflects a concerted effort to ensure diverse perspectives are being considered in the roadmap ’ s development .”
Zairin revealed that the project team also engaged the Ministry of Finance , Bank Negara Malaysia , and the Securities Commission to explore suitable energy transition financing , indicating the muchneeded financial requirements for such a significant undertaking .
“ Identifying financing options is critical for the successful implementation of the roadmap ,” he highlighted .
“ Efficient energy transition management requires a comprehensive approach that involves the federal government , state governments , industry players , the public , and the international community . These collective efforts aim to ensure the stability , sustainability , reliability , and affordability of energy supply for all .”
A COMPREHENSIVE ROADMAP
During the development of the roadmap , NETR ’ s project team conducted a thorough scoping and stocktaking process , evaluating macro and sectoral policies such as the 12th Malaysia Plan , the DTN , BUR4 , the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan ( NEEAP ), Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap ( MyRER ), Malaysia Energy Transition Outlook ( METO ), National
