THE energy transition is crucial in enabling sustainable development . As one of the largest palm oil producers , Malaysia has a huge opportunity to develop biogas as its energy source further . Keen to lead the country ’ s energy transition through biogas , Concord Group has become one of the major players in the biogas sector . The company is a developer and operator of renewable energy ( biogas ) power plants in Malaysia and an Engineering , Procurement , Construction and Commissioning ( EPCC ) contractor for biogas power plants in Indonesia . The biogas power plants use palm oil mill effluent ( POME ), an organic waste produced from the process of crude palm oil production , as feedstock .
“ We are a Malaysian-based company that does renewable energy . We focus more on being a developer , investor and solutions provider for biogas . Our biogas focuses mainly on POME because , as we know , Malaysia has many palm oil mills available for development ,” Datuk Khairuddin Tan Sri Mohd Hussin , Chief Executive Officer of Concord Group , told @ Green at the International Sustainable Energy Summit ( ISES ) 2022 .
He stated that Concord Group invested in projects and built and operated its own biogas plants in Malaysia . The group is also a consultant for biogas development and conducts various corporate social responsibility ( CSR ) programmes . It conducts annual workshops and webinars on biogas technology . It has a collaboration agreement with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu to develop biogas and renewable energy courses , alongside collaborations in research and development on waste management .
“ We expanded to Indonesia about four to five years ago and do biogas projects . But in Indonesia , we are mainly the contractor or EPCC provider , meaning we don ’ t invest in the project , but we become the contractor for people and give back the projects for them to run .
“ In Malaysia , from the biogas that we generate , we convert the biogas into electricity and sell it to Tenaga Nasional Berhad ( TNB ) under the power purchase agreement ( PPA ). In Indonesia , we expand

it ; we convert the biogas into electricity and bio-compressed natural gas ( bio- CNG ) for trucks , etc .”
Offering zero-investment solutions
Khairuddin shared that Concord Group offered zero-investment solutions for its clients . Through this business model , Concord Group will come to the clients ’ palm oil mills and build biogas plants at the sites at zero cost . The company will complete the plants within three years . Under the Sustainable Energy Development Authority ( SEDA )’ s quota , it will inject the electricity produced from the power plants into the grid .
“ When we get the income , the revenue will be shared between the clients and us ,” explained Khairuddin , adding that the company is also responsible for managing the waste management part of the projects .
When asked about the group ’ s plan to expand its business in countries other than Indonesia , he said that the palm oil potential for biogas in Malaysia and Indonesia was still huge , and they ’ re still exploring it .
Concord Group ventured into the renewable energy sector in 2014 and has developed and is operating six biogas power plants with a total of 9.6 MW of electricity to be exported to TNB . Concord Group is also constructing two more plants with a total export capacity of 4.0 MW ,

slated to commission at the end of 2022 and early 2023 . As an EPCC contractor in Indonesia , Concord Group has constructed two biogas plants for renowned Indonesian palm oil companies .
Commenting on ISES 2022 , Khairuddin said : “ This year ’ s ISES is great ! We have been involved in the last two or three ISES before . If I ’ m not mistaken , the last one took place in Kuching . For ISES 2022 , I ’ m very impressed with the preparation and promotion . It looks great . So , hopefully , it will be beneficial to everyone who comes , be they visitors , stakeholders or industry players ; everyone will get something from this two-day event .” – @ Green
