Voltaic vehicles powering sustainability

EVM Asia 2023 ’ s 2nd edition sets the stage for sustainable mobility solutions in the region

PERSONAL transportation is an integral part of the lives of many across the globe , even more so in Malaysia . With the simplicity of owning a private vehicle in the country , it can be said that personal transportation has become a necessity in the bustling lives of Malaysians .

However , owning a personal vehicle comes with its share of problems . With the number of private vehicles steadily increasing on the roads , this will no doubt lead to an increase in traffic jams , leading to more Malaysians spending more time on the road .
Also , the increasing number of motor vehicles on the road would inevitably lead to increased greenhouse gas ( GHG ) emissions into the atmosphere , whereby stationary cars stuck in traffic jams contribute more to GHG emissions than moving vehicles .
Therefore , the need to counter this issue lies in the advent of Electric Vehicles ( EV ) that are powered by electricity use batteries , unlike traditional motor vehicles that use petroleum for combustion and locomotion .
What was once considered a niche within the automotive industry , EVs have since gained traction with automotive organisations to reduce GHG emissions to achieve their net zero carbon emissions target by 2050 , fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) set by the United Nations .
Spearheading this notion is the highly anticipated 2nd edition of the Electric Vehicle Mobility Asia Summit ( EVM ASIA ) 2023 , the Region ’ s No 1 EV / Hybrid Vehicles , Mobility , Manufacturing Technologies , and Parts and Components show .
TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY SOLUTIONS
The EVM ASIA 2023 takes centre stage
Launching the EVM ASIA 2023 .
Tan Sri Dr . Mohd Nasir Mohd Ashraf
at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre ( MITEC ) on Sept 19-21 , 2023 . The event is organised by the AMB Tarsus Events group and powered by the Malaysia Automotive , Robotics , and IoT Institute ( MARii ) as a strategic partner . This three-day event acts as a transformative platform for the future of sustainable mobility solutions .
“ We aim to make EVM ASIA the leading calendar event in the region , aligning with the government ’ s aspiration to establish Malaysia as a major hub for the EV industry ,” said AMB Tarsus Events Group Chairman , Tan Sri Dr Mohd Nasir Mohd Ashraf .
The EVM ASIA 2023 will convene decision-makers from both public and private sectors to share experiences and chart the future of the EV Industry by exploring common industry standards . This exclusive ‘ by invitation only ’ summit will feature the automotive chiefs of Thailand and Indonesia as prominent speakers .
MARii Chief Executive Officer ( CEO ) Azrul Reza Aziz was delighted with the AMB Tarsus Events Group partnership .
“ The event would bring together stakeholders from across the region to showcase the latest innovations , share experiences , and establish common standards in the EV industry ,” said Azrul .
CARBON NEUTRALITY THROUGH ELECTRICITY
Following the success of the soft launch of
the EVM ASIA 2023 on July 27 , 2023 , Azrul hopes that his year ’ s summit will be bigger than last year ’ s summit .
As the world shifts gears to combat the climate change crisis , the need to reduce GHG emissions and achieve the net zero carbon emissions target by 2050 is now more critical than ever .
“ Following the global trends of EVs , one of the objectives of our government is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 ,” said Azrul .
“ Other technologies , such as synthetic oil and fuel cells , could also achieve that . But those technologies are still in the early development stages . Therefore , EV is more relevant for the time being to achieve future carbon neutrality .”
However , there is also the problem of pricing of the EVs . Despite not having a specific target market , those who could afford EVs are wealthy with a high income , whereas those with medium to low income earners may not have the means to afford an EV .
“ The pricing point of EVs is a bit on the high side ,” Azrul expressed . “ The cost of a battery per kilo watt hovers around US $ 150 . As technology advances , we could reduce the price of batteries to around US $ 100 , making them affordable to lowincome earners . However , it is not going to be that soon .”
On the flip side , owning an EV could also be worthwhile .
Azrul explained : “ In terms of EV ownership in the long run , it can be quite competitive to own because of the low maintenance costs of an EV . Traditional motor vehicles have around 5000 moving parts and components , whereas EVs are only half of that . Besides the low maintenance cost , there is also the low cost of using charging stations compared to purchasing petrol for traditional motor vehicles .”
Azrul hopes that the technology of EVs will be swiftly adopted soon to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 . On the other hand , Azrul also hopes that other technologies that could also be used to reduce carbon emissions are not entirely omitted but could function in tandem with EVs to combat the climate crisis . – @ Green
