This inclusive approach ensures that residents of the island have a significant role in the sustainable co-management of the island ’ s invaluable natural resources .
“ We will continue our education programmes with the local schools , our responsible tourism programs with resorts and dive operators , and we will continue rehabilitating reefs , monitoring reefs and conducting research .”

BORN and bred in Kajang , Selangor , the outdoors always beckoned Alvin Chelliah . With parents who nurtured a love for the outdoors , Alvin naturally gravitated towards all things nature .
His interest in coral reefs was sparked during high school diving experiences , leading to a Marine Science degree at Universiti Malaysia Sabah and a master ’ s at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia .
Alvin ’ s journey began with volunteering at Reef Check Malaysia ( RCM ) during his postgraduate studies , laying the groundwork for his conservation commitment .
“ In 2011 , Reef Check Malaysia offered me a permanent position , and I ’ ve been working with them ever since .” Relocating to Pulau Tioman marked a turning point . “ It marked my shift from working solely with marine life to engaging local communities ,” he reflects . “ My volunteering experiences locally and overseas also opened my eyes to the different issues reefs and the communities , depending on them , were facing .
“ Working with RCM and moving to live on Pulau Tioman was a big milestone , too , as it was a huge responsibility and something new to me . It was the first time I would have to work with people ( local communities ) and not just fish ( coral reefs ).”
His involvement in opposing the proposed Pulau Tioman airport construction demonstrated his dedication to scientific advocacy and collaboration with government systems .
With the proposal of the new airport on Pulau Tioman Island being rejected , Alvin shared : “ I was never involved in such a process before . So , going through the Terms of Reference for the EIA , the review of the EIA , and the feedback process , everything was new for me .
“ The positive outcome at the end was just the best we could hope for and one of the most significant milestones in my career to date .

“ This positive outcome was also a good reminder that , as a nation , we have systems to protect and manage our ecosystems . We need to support our government , work with them and provide them with the science and data they need so that they can make informed decisions .”
Deep diving into education and community service are typical parts of Alvin ’ s work with nature , which he believes extends well beyond the reefs .
Former students he introduced to marine education over a decade ago have joined him in Pulau Tioman Conservation Group and support the Cintai Tioman conservation activities . Beginning their training as young children , these individuals contribute to the cause as certified scuba divers .
“ One of my dearest moments was the day some of our past students , whom I had started to teach over a decade ago , started working with us on Pulau Tioman conservation activities ,” Alvin stated proudly .
Some have even been invited to programmes in Terengganu and Sabah . This represents a tremendous feeling of closure for Alvin as the next generation steps forward , positioned to be the positive force behind coral reef protection and sustainable management .
“ To anyone aspiring to be a part of conservation , I ’ d say start by volunteering . Gain experience , explore different places , and find your calling and true passion ,” he advised .
Alvin ’ s journey epitomises the power of passion , education , and community collaboration in safeguarding the ocean ’ s treasures .
