• Raising awareness about proper e-waste disposal is crucial and aligns with halal and toyyib principles . Engaging the community through initiatives like weekly seminars or social media campaigns can promote responsible consumer behaviour and ensure proper disposal of electronic devices .
• Implementing extended producer responsibility ( EPR ) is another effective strategy . This approach holds manufacturers accountable for their products ’ entire life cycle , encouraging sustainable practices and responsible product management . Numerous global efforts have effectively , though unknowingly , incorporated halal and toyyib principles into electronic waste management . In Malaysia , for instance , government policies align with these principles to ensure the environmentally responsible handling of e-waste .
These policies include stringent protocols for the collection , transportation , and processing of electronic waste . As of February 2021 , there were around 127 collection points across the country , along with pick-up centres offering e-waste collection services .
For example , in Selangor alone , there are 34 collection centres dedicated to e-waste management . Additionally , a mobile application ( more information here : https :// ewaste . doe . gov . my /) is available to help users locate these centres ( Department of Environment , 2024 ).
In 2022 , a series of e-waste awareness campaigns have been conducted such as in Dungun ( held at a site near Eco Shop Building , Sura Gete , Dungun ), Seremban ( Taman Muruguse ), Shah Alam ( Pusat Kitar Semula MBSA Seksyen U2 ), Melaka ( AEON Mall Bandaraya Melaka ) and Kuala Lumpur ( Technoflex , MRANTI Park ); to name a few .
These programmes were collaboratively held between strategic partners with the central aim of educating the public and industry towards responsible use and , hence , proper management of e-waste (( Department of Environment , 2024 ).
SUSTAINABLE E-WASTE SOLUTIONS !
Incorporating halal and toyyib principles into e-waste management provides a comprehensive approach to tackling the environmental and ethical dilemmas posed by electronic waste .
Prioritising clean , secure , and sustainable practices can resolve the negative impact of e-waste on the environment and human health . This transition requires active participation from governments , manufacturers , and consumers .
Policymakers can enforce ethical recycling regulations , manufacturers can prioritise sustainability in product design , and consumers can make informed decisions about electronic device disposal and purchasing . – @ green
