Northport has been on the forefront of
trading between Malaysia and Japan.
The parties intend to collaborate with the
objective of establishing the Malaysia Japan
Halal Value Chain initiative of integrated
Halal shipments from Port Klang to Japan by
creating an end-to-end logistics operation
value chain and facilitate halal trade arrange-
ment between Malaysia and Japan. In doing
so, the parties will also promote Selangor
as the preferred investment location for
Japanese Halal Manufacturers to penetrate
ASEAN and Global Halal market, capitalizing
on Malaysia’s position as a leader in Halal
manufacturing and certification.
Helping the SMEs to Japan
“I believe that with this MoU, our Malaysian
exporters especially the SMEs will have a
better chance to expand their businesses
to Japan and any other destinations via the
value chain approach that the MoU partners
are providing as the logistics requirements
from Malaysia to Japan and vice versa are
being streamlined and simplified. I urge all
Malaysian exporters especially the SMEs
to take advantage of these opportunities
which may arise from this initiative and to
further improve your products to suite the
global market’s needs”, said Datuk Seri Mohd
Redzuan.
“Northport will work closely with various
parties including Ministry of Entrepreneur
Development (“MED”), Malaysian Investment
Development Authority (“MIDA”), MATRADE,
JETRO, Invest Selangor, JAKIM and SME Cor-
poration Malaysia and to use best endeavors
to secure their endorsements of the Malaysia
Japan Halal Value Chain initiative”, added
Dato’ Azman.
The Weifang Experience
Previously, Northport and Kontena Nasional
Berhad, both members of the Malaysian
conglomerate MMC Corp, led the charge for
the ground breaking initiative, together with
Weifang Sime Darby Port.
They promised customers port-to-port
delivery in 28 days, with goods shipped from
Northport in Port Klang to Weifang Port,
The team at Northport
(Malaysia) Berhad and
partners in making the
Halal Silk Route a reality.
which is one of the most direct routes to the
Muslim-majority China regions of Shaanxi,
Ningxia, Qinghai, Gansu and Xinjiang.
“We are convinced that this collaboration
is the first step towards linking the approxi-
mately 2.1 billion global Muslim populations
through the trade of Halal products,” Dato’
Azman Shah said. “Besides providing a One
Stop Center for exporters, the Halal Silk Route
also aims to provide a Halal export process
which is very cost competitive and transpar-
ent.” The promise is for end-to-end logistics
services with integrated Halal value-added
services, hassle free documentation processes
and competitive transportation cost.
The collaboration saw the handling of the
logistics work that entail customs clearance,
container handling and delivery/distribution
tasks such as haulage services. Value added
services such as warehouse storage, inven-
tory management and repackaging are also
included.
This end to end value chain approach also
took care of Halal verification and registration
in China as well as labelling in Chinese. Often,
exporters overlook the importance of these
steps, which can delay shipments.
