The parties intend to collaborate with the objective of establishing the Malaysia Japan Halal Value Chain initiative of integrated Halal shipments from Port Klang to Japan by creating an end-to-end logistics operation value chain and facilitate halal trade arrange- ment between Malaysia and Japan. In doing so, the parties will also promote Selangor as the preferred investment location for Japanese Halal Manufacturers to penetrate ASEAN and Global Halal market, capitalizing on Malaysia’s position as a leader in Halal manufacturing and certification. Helping the SMEs to Japan “I believe that with this MoU, our Malaysian exporters especially the SMEs will have a better chance to expand their businesses to Japan and any other destinations via the value chain approach that the MoU partners are providing as the logistics requirements from Malaysia to Japan and vice versa are being streamlined and simplified. I urge all Malaysian exporters especially the SMEs to take advantage of these opportunities which may arise from this initiative and to further improve your products to suite the global market’s needs”, said Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan. “Northport will work closely with various parties including Ministry of Entrepreneur Development (“MED”), Malaysian Investment Development Authority (“MIDA”), MATRADE, JETRO, Invest Selangor, JAKIM and SME Cor- poration Malaysia and to use best endeavors to secure their endorsements of the Malaysia Japan Halal Value Chain initiative”, added Dato’ Azman. The Weifang Experience Previously, Northport and Kontena Nasional Berhad, both members of the Malaysian conglomerate MMC Corp, led the charge for the ground breaking initiative, together with Weifang Sime Darby Port. They promised customers port-to-port delivery in 28 days, with goods shipped from Northport in Port Klang to Weifang Port, The team at Northport (Malaysia) Berhad and partners in making the Halal Silk Route a reality. which is one of the most direct routes to the Muslim-majority China regions of Shaanxi, Ningxia, Qinghai, Gansu and Xinjiang. “We are convinced that this collaboration is the first step towards linking the approxi- mately 2.1 billion global Muslim populations through the trade of Halal products,” Dato’ Azman Shah said. “Besides providing a One Stop Center for exporters, the Halal Silk Route also aims to provide a Halal export process which is very cost competitive and transpar- ent.” The promise is for end-to-end logistics services with integrated Halal value-added services, hassle free documentation processes and competitive transportation cost. The collaboration saw the handling of the logistics work that entail customs clearance, container handling and delivery/distribution tasks such as haulage services. Value added services such as warehouse storage, inven- tory management and repackaging are also included. This end to end value chain approach also took care of Halal verification and registration in China as well as labelling in Chinese. Often, exporters overlook the importance of these steps, which can delay shipments.
