Interestingly , in Northport , we already have a specific warehouse for halal . The ecosystem is already there for halal logistics services . It is just that many importers of exporters are still unaware of its availability . So , we will work with Northport to promote the services . This will positively impact Selangor and other States as well ,” Zawawi added .
HALAL COTTAGE INITIATIVE
He shared there were discussions to give opportunities to industry players to obtain halal certification . The committee observed many of them , especially food and beverages ( F & B ) players , were operating from home . In this scenario , these players will not be able to get halal certification .
“ Therefore , the Selangor Islamic Religious Department ( JAIS ) introduced the ‘ halal cottage ’ initiative for these SMEs . We give them two years before shifting to a better premise .
“ We will deal with developers such as Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor ( PKNS ) and others to provide smaller premises for these players . As we can see now , the available premises are quite big , which may not be suitable for SMEs .”
Zawawi said this initiative would help players to penetrate other markets , such as supermarkets and petrol stations .

ROLLING OUT THE HALALSEL APPLICATION
The Selangor government recently softlaunched the HALALSEL application , which aims to strengthen further and empower the State ’ s halal industry . It is an open platform for consumers , entrepreneurs and business owners to promote their products and services . Zawawi said the application would be ready for users to download during SELHAC 2023 .
“ In addition to boosting the halal industry , it encourages companies with halal certificates to promote their premises and indirectly makes it easier for consumers to obtain confirmation of halal status from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia ( JAKIM ).
“ The HALALSEL application will be introduced at the HIS Toyyiba Sdn Bhd booth to users and visitors during the three days of SELHAC 2023 . The application will prioritise food premises and companies with halal certification in Selangor to promote their businesses to consumers .
“ The next phase will be followed up with a company database of food and beverage products , pharmaceuticals , cosmetics , hospitality , financial instruments and consumer goods

HOPES FOR SELHAC 2023 AND THE STATE ’ S HALAL INDUSTRY
To strengthen SELHAC ’ s position as one of Malaysia ’ s main halal events , Zawawi said SELHAC would be held as an annual programme to catalyse the halal industry in Selangor . He noted that the programme would help strengthen trade relations between countries through SHEZ .
“ We will design a new logo for SELHAC , which is more dynamic and reflects the corporate image of the event . We will promote SELHAC every time we visit other countries and invite them as participants or presenters .
“ I hope that SELHAC 2023 will be a platform for traders and entrepreneurs from small , medium and large industries to market their local halal products and generate the halal economy in Selangor and globally .
“ The programme can increase the market potential of halal products domestically through business matching ; at the same time , entrepreneurs and traders in the halal ecosystem can further intensify business opportunities to catalyse the halal industry in Selangor and Malaysia .”
