Upholding integrity in a global market

MALAYSIA continues to establish itself as a global leader in the halal industry, setting strict standards that guarantee the highest level of integrity in halal certification.

A recent report by the United States Trade Representative( USTR) highlighted Malaysia’ s halal requirements as more stringent than international standards, prompting discussions within the global trade and halal sectors.
Among the key differences is Malaysia’ s insistence that all imported meat, poultry, and dairy products be halal-certified by a recognised foreign certification body.
Additionally, slaughterhouses exporting to Malaysia must have dedicated halal production lines and maintain strict separation during the storage and transportation of both halal and non-halal products.
This exceeds international standards, which generally permit shared facilities if Islamic cleansing procedures, known as sertu, are followed.
Exporters must also register with Malaysia’ s Department of Veterinary Services( DVS). This process requires detailed documentation and on-site inspections by both the DVS and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia( JAKIM).
Although the process is thorough, it demonstrates Malaysia’ s strong commitment to maintaining Shariah-compliant standards.
While some international exporters see these requirements as complicated and timeconsuming, Malaysia’ s approach focuses on safeguarding the halal status of products and protecting Muslim consumers.
These measures also align with maqasid alshariah, which emphasise safety, cleanliness, and religious observance in all aspects of consumption.
As the global halal market continues to expand, Malaysia’ s dedication to maintaining strong certification processes positions it at the leading edge of halal excellence.
Although challenges exist, particularly for new exporters, these standards are vital in maintaining trust in halal certification globally.
The call for increased international harmonisation in halal standards persists, but Malaysia’ s example demonstrates that integrity must stay at the core of halal industry practices.
