PRACTICAL GUIDELINES
Following food trends can be enjoyable, but as Muslims, we must foremost ensure that what we consume is halal. There is no need to miss out on viral trends- what matters is making informed and responsible choices.
Drawing on recommendations from the Halal Food Council USA( 2024), the following four practical steps can help consumers enjoy trending foods while remaining mindful of their faith.
· Look for Halal Certification Labels: Do not be misled by how attractive or“ aesthetic” a food or restaurant appears. Instead, let recognised halal certification be your main guide. This applies not only to packaged snacks but also to viral restaurants and cafes, which should be checked for halal status before visiting. A visually appealing shop does not guarantee halal compliance. Taking a moment to verify can help
prevent the consumption of prohibited or doubtful( shubhah) food.
· Check the Ingredients: Carefully read the ingredients list on the product packaging. This helps ensure there are no hidden non-halal ingredients such as alcohol, animal-derived gelatine, or pork-based additives, which are commonly used in processed foods. Being attentive at this stage allows consumers to make more informed and responsible choices.
· Use Halal Food Apps: Today, technology makes it easier to verify food choices. Consumers can download halal verification apps, such as Verify Halal, or use trusted platforms to check the halal status of products and restaurants quickly. These tools provide convenient support for making more confident decisions.
" Within hours, the trend spreads rapidly across social media, and the pressure of FOMO( Fear of Missing Out) begins to build. Many people immediately want to try the food, so they do not feel left out. "
· Seek Recommendations and Reviews: If you are unsure about a product’ s halal status, avoid guessing. Instead, refer to trusted sources such as halal community forums and reliable reviews from other consumers on social media. Gathering information from experienced, informed users can support better, safer decisions.
MINDFUL CONSUMERISM
In conclusion, Muslims should not pursue viral food trends solely for social media attention while neglecting halal verification. Mindlessly following trends may lead to the accidental consumption of prohibited ingredients such as pork-derived gelatine and alcohol.
Consuming halal food is not simply a lifestyle preference, but a religious obligation. By practising mindful consumerism and consistently verifying halal status before purchasing, Muslims can protect their faith, health, and financial well-being while preserving the barakah( blessing) in their sustenance.-
