Did we miss the woods for the trees ?

We must have read a million stories

by now that halal is the fastestgrowing industry in the world .
It does not only cater to Muslims , but even non-Muslims have become very comfortable with halal food , primarily because of the guarantees it provides . Halal food is wholesome and clean .
However , unfortunately , Budget 2021 that was announced on Nov 6 contained little to push the halal industry .
The Budget merely said this : RM150 million to implement the Shop Malaysia Online initiative together with the e-commerce platform to encourage online spending , which will benefit 500,000 local sellers , including the halal products and handicrafts entrepreneurs .
The reference to “ halal ” was just once . It was incidental , not specific . Now , consider this :
• The global halal market size is estimated to be worth US $ 3 trillion and expected to snowball to US $ 7.7 trillion by 2030 .
• Malaysia has about 8,000 halal-certified companies .
• The global Muslim population has exceeded three billion , providing an ever-growing market . Now the pertinent questions filter through :
• Why weren ’ t there enough incentives in the Budget for the Malaysian halal industry ?
• Malaysia set benchmarks in global halal certification and halal products . Are we now content to be followers , allowing others like Indonesia , Singapore , Thailand , Japan and Vietnam set the pace ?
• Shouldn ’ t Malaysia be leading the way , especially given we were the pace-setters and trendsetters ? Well , someone or the relevant ministry such as the Ministry of International Trade and Industry messed this up .
The Covid-19 pandemic has not done us favours . Every segment of the Malaysian demographics has suffered . Still , here it is , a whole global stage which can be Malaysia ’ s for the taking .
But , alas , not . Whether it was apathy , indifference , carelessness or worst distraction caused by personal political agendas we will never know .
Now , this ship is set to sail , and Malaysia may rue the day for arriving late , or not at all , at the harbour .
