Breaking boundaries

THE 2024 Budget announcement , delivered by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim , highlights the vital role of Malaysia ’ s halal industry in the country ’ s economy . The government has allocated RM20 million to stimulate research , creativity , and innovation within the Islamic economy .

A specific budget has also been earmarked to promote the growth of Muslim-friendly tourism in Malaysia through the Islamic Tourism Centre ( ITC ). This scenario demonstrates the successful efforts in these segments , leading the government to invest further in their development .
In a landscape where the halal sector has expanded its reach beyond the traditional market to encompass finance and tourism , modest fashion presents another promising avenue for exploration .
Malaysia , as the global halal hub , is well-positioned to harness it . The participation of the Malaysian Official Designers Association ( MODA ) in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase ( MIHAS ) 2023 is a positive development . However , there is room for improvement .
Indonesia ’ s recent Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival ( IN2MF ), held in conjunction with the Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival ( ISEF ) 2023 in Jakarta , is a noteworthy example for Malaysia . The event provided a platform for over 170 local and international designers to showcase their creations on a grand scale .
Modest fashion entrepreneurs were allocated two dedicated halls to display and sell their products , and their trusted brands attracted a substantial public response . Interestingly , buyers extended beyond the Muslim community to encompass a diverse audience .
Malaysia ’ s modest fashion industry exhibits solid domestic demand , although smaller than Indonesia ’ s due to its larger population . While competition is high within Malaysia due to its smaller population and well-established domestic market , modest Malaysian fashion designers should seize the opportunity to explore international markets inspired by the enthusiasm of Indonesian consumers . There ’ s a clear export potential .
Although fashion styles may differ , with Malaysia emphasising minimalism and Indonesia favouring layers and cultural uniqueness , fashion is inherently subjective and adaptable . Focusing on the substantial opportunities presented by Indonesia ’ s modest fashion scene could be a strategic starting point .
The time has come to diversify and break away from the traditional halal market . Therefore , future government budgets might consider allocating resources to support this initiative to establish the nation as the global hub for modest fashion . –
