NESTLED amid Malaysia ’ s bustling cities , Yayasan Al- Jenderami stands as a serene sanctuary dedicated to lifelong learning , spiritual growth , and community development .

Established almost 40 years ago , this institution has grown from a small madrasah ( educational institution ) into a vibrant community , now led by Haji Abdul Razak Dato Ipap , the foundation ’ s dedicated Chairman .
FROM MADRASAH TO MODERN RETREAT
Reflecting on the foundation ’ s journey , Razak shared : “ Al-Jenderami has been around for nearly 40 years . Our founder , Dato Tuan Guru Sheikh Muhammad Hafiz Masalaman , started a small madrasah in 1986 . It gradually evolved into a thriving community .”
Initially occupying a mere five acres , the foundation has since expanded to cover 32 acres . Located conveniently close to Putrajaya and Cyberjaya , Al-Jenderami retains the charm of a village while being surrounded by modern urban developments . This unique positioning allows it to offer a serene retreat within reach of the city .
The foundation ’ s evolution led to the formal establishment of Yayasan Al- Jenderami in 2023 , aimed at enhancing engagement with stakeholders , government agencies , and NGOs .
THE PONDOKSTAY CONCEPT
The PondokStay concept is a novel initiative that preserves and promotes the legacy of traditional Islamic education . Originating from a collaboration between UiTM academics and the Islamic Tourism Centre ( ITC ), PondokStay offers a unique blend of religious and cultural immersion .
Unlike typical homestay experiences , PondokStay invites visitors to partake in the tranquil environment of a pondok , participate in traditional religious classes , and engage in programmes designed for spiritual and personal growth .
“ The pondok , historically a centre for Islamic learning , has seen a decline over the years .
“ Yayasan Al-Jenderami strives to keep this legacy alive , offering visitors a chance to reconnect with their faith in a meaningful way .
“ We are steadfast in preserving the
knowledge and traditions of the pondok . It ’ s about lifelong learning and maintaining our religious heritage ,” Razak emphasised .
A JOURNEY OF GROWTH AND FAITH
The PondokStay initiative has significant potential to contribute to Malaysia ’ s tourism industry , particularly within the Muslim- Friendly Tourism and Hospitality ( MFTH ) sector .
Although still in its early stages , the initiative , supported by Ministry of Tourism , Arts and Culture ( MOTAC ) and ITC — a key supporter of this initiative , recognised the importance of promoting Islamic tourism and has been instrumental in developing and supporting this unique concept .
Razak mentioned : “ Faith tourism has a unique appeal . Just like pilgrimage sites worldwide , our PondokStay offers unique experiences for those seeking spiritual fulfilment .
“ We have already welcomed visitors from America , Canada , India , China , and Australia . We have students from the age of 3 right up to 90 years old .
“ We are grateful for ITC ’ s efforts to promote this sector . Their support has been

invaluable , and with their support , we can expand our reach even further .”
Razak shared that the feedback from guests has been excellent . Many arrive with preconceived notions but leave with a great appreciation for the unique experience delivered .
CHALLENGES AND FUTURE PLANS
Implementing the PondokStay concept , however , has been challenging .
“ Our main challenges are awareness and funding . We rely heavily on donations and contributions . But with ITC ’ s support , we do hope to reach a broader audience and continue to preserve our mission ,” Razak explained .
Looking ahead , Razak is excited about the prospects for expanding Al-Jenderami .
Sustainability and community involvement remain central to its mission . Ensuring continuity through training future leaders and volunteers is crucial .
Lifelong learning , catering to all ages , remains at the heart of Al-Jenderami ’ s activities . Plans to enhance facilities and accommodate more visitors aim to provide a comfortable and enriching experience for all .
“ People need to understand that this is more than just a pondok . It is also a place where many older folks come to spend their remaining days on earth .
“ Currently , we have about 150 people who reside here full-time . Some have been here for even 20 years or more .
“ People don ’ t just come here to read the Quran ; we are a community here above all else .”
ISLAMIC TOURISM REIMAGINED
Yayasan Al-Jenderami continues to be a beacon of tradition and spiritual enrichment , bridging the past and present through its innovative PondokStay programme . With the support of ITC , this initiative not only preserves the rich heritage of Islamic learning but also offers a unique retreat for those seeking reflection and renewal .
As it moves forward , Yayasan Al-Jenderami is poised to make a lasting impact on Malaysia ’ s tourism landscape , inviting visitors to experience a harmonious blend of faith , learning , and community . – RnR
