Malaysia ' s Muslim-friendly tourism sector is supported by strong government policies, a robust halal ecosystem, and initiatives such as the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition( MFAR) and Muslim- Friendly Tourist Guide( MFTG). Its appeal lies in its inclusive tourism landscape, offering various Muslimfriendly facilities and accessibility for diverse travellers.
There is increasing interest among destinations to enhance their Muslim-friendly credentials. More restaurants, hotels, and attractions are actively pursuing halal certification and ratings to meet the expectations of Muslim travellers, particularly in the area of halal dining.
Non-OIC destinations such as Singapore, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Ireland, Australia, and Spain have shown consistent progress in appealing to Muslim travellers. These countries are improving infrastructure, services, and overall experiences to create more inclusive environments for Muslim visitors.
Destinations in the Gulf Cooperation Council( GCC), including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, have made notable gains in the GMTI rankings. National strategies such as Saudi Arabia ' s Vision 2030 and the UAE ' s economic diversification efforts have led to investments in tourism infrastructure, cultural experiences, and digital innovation.
OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MUSLIM TRAVEL MARKET
MUSLIM WOMAN-FRIENDLY DESTINATIONS
Introduced at the GMTI 2023, the Muslim Women-Friendly Destination sub-index reflects the growing presence and influence of Muslim women in the travel industry. Many now travel solo or in female-only groups and often lead travel planning within families.
Market Influence and Potential: Muslim women comprise a significant portion of the Muslim travel market. Their role in travel decision-making, especially for families and couples, is notably strong.
Trends and Preferences: Social media and digital platforms have increased the visibility of Muslim women travellers. This has driven demand for destinations that respect faith-based needs and provide autonomy, comfort, and safety.
Assessment Criteria: Under the ACES model ' s Environment dimension, destinations are assessed based on four key areas: faith restrictions, safety, sustainability and overall Muslim-friendliness.
Top OIC Destinations: Southeast Asia leads the rankings, with Malaysia scoring 83 and Indonesia 79, reflecting strong efforts to offer safe, inclusive, and faith-aligned travel experiences. The Middle East also remains a key region.
MUSLIM-FRIENDLY ACCESSIBLE DESTINATIONS
Introduced in GMTI 2025, the Muslim-Friendly Accessible Travel Destination sub-index highlights the importance of inclusive travel environments for physically challenged travellers, neurodivergent individuals, active seniors, and multi-generational families.
Market Influence and Potential: Over one billion people globally live with disabilities and often travel with companions. As disability increases with age, accessible travel becomes increasingly relevant for family-based Muslim travel. Studies show that 60 per cent of families are willing to pay more for neurodiverse-friendly options, signalling high demand.
Trends and Preferences: The shift towards accessible travel aligns with values of dignity and inclusivity. Destinations are beginning to recognise the need for meaningful, faith-aligned accessibility solutions.
Assessment Criteria: Destinations are assessed under the ACES model based on four key criteria: accessibility, transport infrastructure, safety and overall Muslim-friendliness.
Top OIC Destinations: An analysis of accessible, Muslim-friendly destinations within the OIC reveals strong faith-based environments but also highlights gaps in accessibility. Top performers include Qatar( 75), Malaysia( 74), Maldives( 71), Türkiye( 71), and Indonesia( 70), highlighting both progress and opportunities for improvement.- RnR
