Unmasking a Covid-19 environmental issue

IT ’ S STRANGE . People don ’ t even realise it . This is the time of the year , and it has been for the past 10-15 years , that we hear the usual chorus of environmental degradation .

Yes , the haze . Southeast Asian countries would now be engulfed by smog , and we would measure air quality day-by-day . And let ’ s not even start with the finger-pointing .
There ’ s a more significant issue now . We concerned about the mortality rate , colossal damage brought upon us by the raging and relentless Covid-19 pandemic .
Lockdowns have forced people indoors . Food and groceries are now delivered to our doorstep - no more dine-ins .
And with that comes a yet unmitigated problem . The massive pile of plastic bags , plastic containers , styrofoam containers , and straws find their way to our landfills .
It seems a necessary evil now , though . We can ’ t have the cake and eat it too .
And face masks ? It is shocking that while face masks are enforced and their proper use is widely promoted , scant regard and attention have been given to their proper disposal .
There is a need for awareness on what should be done when face masks are discarded . These , too , are en route to our dumping grounds , where scavengers lurk .
It is not unusual to see face masks discarded at sea around our sea creatures ’ neck , leg , or fins . Or , birds that search for food at landfills flying away with the face masks around the necks and , worst still , their wings .
Yes , we are dealing with a pandemic . Numerous lives are being lost every day . But that does not mean we create or contribute to another environmental problem , one that may yet come back to bite us someday .
It is simple . When one discards a face mask , all that person has to do is pull off the strings at one end on both sides . Done . No stress . No energy wasted . Just sheer common sense .
Easy , isn ’ t it ? p18
