Most of the product that is sold in Malaysia contains added sugar. W R ecently, the Malaysian public went into a frenzy when entrepreneur Vishen Lakhiani uploaded two videos that vent viral on the enormous amount of sugar in Malaysia’s favourite chocolate malt drink. T PRESCRIPTIVE LAUGHTER Girl: Give it to me! Give it to me! I’m so wet, give it to me now!” Guy: Scream all you want, I’m keeping the umbrella. HE almost f ive minute video that wa s c i rc u l ate d across every social m e d i a p l a t fo r m informed the public how Milo contained 40 per cent of sugar. To this claim, Nestle (Malaysia) Berhad senior nutritionist Nurul Iliani Ahmad replied in a statement recently that Milo in powder form contains milk, malt, cocoa and sugar. By following the recommended preparation of adding five teaspoons of Milo powder into 200ml of hot water, Nurul claimed that the serving only contained six per cent of sugar. Of this six per cent, she said that three per cent is natural sugar which is from milk and malt while three per cent is added sugar. Nurul totally baffled everyone claiming that the 40 per cent sugar content shown on the label refers to Milo powder before water is added. Although Milo has malt extracts to provide energy and contains several B vitamins, vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, iron and protein, the question still remains- is Milo safe for consumption? Is Milo safe to drink? The HEALTH spoke to Malaysian Dietitian Association dietitian Philips Lee to get the answer. According to Philips, it does not matter if a person consumes Milo or not because at the end of the day it all drops down to the food intake we consume daily. “Drinking Milo does not deter- mine whether we are living a healthy life or not.” “Most of the product that is sold in Malaysia contains added sugar. If not, no one would buy it,” he said. Philips further explained that what mattered most was the overall food intake consumed in a day and how active we are. “That is why it is crucial to refer to a dietitian in order to find the right diet for your body,” he explained. Philips further stressed that it all drops down to moderation which is the key to living healthily.
