APRIL, 2019 | Th e heALTh Opinion tion among the public in Malaysia about vaccines. Notions that vaccines, and immunization in general, are a threat and a conspiracy remains rampant throughout social media. Th is has led to growing number of individuals actively oppos- ing vaccination for their children, which as we know, can lead to devastating results. Immunising our children against life-threatening diseases is no longer an individual’s choice or right – rather, a respon- sibility we must take upon ourselves to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone. Let’s not conform to the few claiming that vaccines are making our kids sick or a corporate conspiracy. Vaccinate our children, keep caution, and keep healthy. Norman hussaini Editor 03 The green lung eff ect A well planned, humane and livable city is judged by its commitment to preserve green areas as green lungs. New York for example has its own Central Park, a 1,317 square miles of lush green forest right in the middle of Manhattan near the famous Times Square. It was established in 1857 and has undergone numerous developments to enhance and preserve its natural fauna and fl ora. In Cape Town South Africa, the 1,300 -acre Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens was established in 1913 and home to hundreds of plant species and animals found in the African continent. And who doesn’t know about Hyde Park in London. I had visited all these magnifi cent gardens and the expe- rience convinced me that Kuala Lumpur has to preserve whatever green areas we have left and not succumb to uncontrolled development that will destroy these important legacies of nature. Linda Boyle knows it. • From beauty queen to super woman • Mazwin wins the fi ght against cancer Lately we have heard about the the Federal Minister’s dilemma against developers who have signed contracts with the previous government to develop Federal Hill and the Taman Rimba Kiara project in TTDI. Th e residents living in these areas are concerned about the destruction of these important recreational areas and have launched petitions and demonstrations to create awareness of the issue. Urban planning has to take into account the preservation and creation of green space which are important to human health and the environmental. It is also a challenge when there is pressure for space, resources and development. Kuala Lumpur’s massive number of high rise buildings are now experiencing a glut. Malls are losing tenants and yet developers think about creating more malls and high rise offi ce space. It does not make sense. With the rise of home and online shopping, offi ce workers are ordering their best biryanis and favorite foods via Grab- Food, Foodpanda and other e-delivery services. Housewives get Tesco and Giant to deliver groceries to their homes. Soon more and more people will be working from home. When people’s lifestyle change, they will be looking for public parks for recreation and exercise. Last Sunday I took my grandson to the Lake Gardens and was surprised to see more people enjoying the greenery. Soon there will be pres- sure to provide more green space. Besides providing shade they also help lower temperatures, even reduce erosion of soil into our waterways, recharging ground water supplies, and protects lakes and streams from polluted runoff . Within the Federal Hill area currently there is a stream and a pond which is essential to reduce fl ooding. Once concrete development takes place these streams and ponds will have concrete embankments and water runoff s from the concrete surface will cause fl oods, something that is not unfamiliar to Bangsar residents. Walking and jogging within the greenery of Federal Hill, I already encounter heavy traffi c jams as the evening traffi c take a short cut through the area. It will only get worse in the future. – Th e Health ADI SATRIA, a veteran of the marketing communications industry feels the squeeze on the natural green areas of the city as the years go by. For the sake of our mental and physical health, he feels our city planners must put priority into preserving whatever is left of the green spaces in the city.
