Spearheading UKM ’ s KL Health Campus
Dr Noor Hisham awarded honorary doctorate
Prof Datuk Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid ’ s appointment as new Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia ( UKM ) Pro-Vice Chancellor ( Kuala Lumpur Campus ) is expected to spearhead UKM ’ s Health Campus in Kuala Lumpur to become an international Centre of Excellence .
Dr Hanafiah ’ s appointment is for three years effective March 1 , 2021 . He was previously Hospital Cancelor Tuanku Muhriz ( HCTM ) Director .
“ It is hoped that his appointment will spearhead UKM ’ s Health Campus in Kuala Lumpur to become an international Centre of Excellence that will be a catalyst for an academic-led economic growth for the country ,” UKM said in a recent statement .
UKM said the appointment of the consultant vascular surgeon will see him leading UKM Kuala Lumpur Health Campus which comprises four health faculties ( Medicine , Dentistry , Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences ), two hospitals ( HCTM and UKM Children ’ s Specialist Hospital ( HPKK ) and the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute ( UMBI ).
Dr Hanafiah , 53 , was the first Malaysian to be awarded the ‘ Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh International ’ medal in 2016 and was appointed as the international surgical advisor for the oldest surgical institution in the world .
“ He was instrumental in the establishment of the Advanced Surgical Skills Center ( ASSC ), UKM , and the first Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh International Office located at this centre ( HCTM ) as well ,” the statement said .
He received his education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar and graduated from University of St Andrews with a Bachelor ’ s in Medical Sciences in 1990 , and with an MBChB from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1993 . He obtained a fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998 .

HEALTH Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah was conferred the honorary doctorate in Leadership in Public Health in conjunction with the 48th convocation of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia ( UKM ).
The scroll was presented to him by UKM Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz Almarhum Tuanku Munawir on April 3 .
In a posting on his Twitter , Dr Noor Hisham thanked the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir for presenting him the award .
He regarded the award as a recognition of the commitment and dedication of educators at UKM and all the health workers .
“ My appreciation and gratitude to UKM and its Faculty of Medicine for this award . As an alumnus of the UKM Faculty of Medicine in 1988 and 1994 , I am also proud to see the success achieved by graduates who received their degrees at this convocation ceremony , which is held under the new normal circumstances ,” he said according to Bernama .
Dr Noor Hisham also expressed his appreciation to his mentor Prof Emeritus Dr Freda Andrea Meah , who is an endocrinologist , for her congratulatory speech .
“ I wouldn ’ t be who I am today if it wasn ’ t for the guidance and supervision of Professor Freda Meah . Thank you very much and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity and the lifetime journey to do what is right for the people . InsyaAllah ,” said Dr Noor Hisham .

In the 45-second video , Dr Freda Andrea said Dr Noor Hisham was his first trainee for endocrine surgery and that he was the best endocrine surgeon .
“ I am extremely proud of him , I congratulate him from the bottom of my heart in receiving the doctorate degree which he deserved 100 per cent ,” she said .
Last year , Dr Noor Hisham was awarded the 2019 Distinguished Alumni by the UKM Faculty of Medicine for his great contribution in the field of medicine . — The Health
