150 cancer survivors
celebrate their survivorship

ATIONAl Cancer Survivors
Day with the theme “Caring
Enough to Give” was recently
held at the National Blood Bank. The
event, organised by the National
Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM)
aimed at highlighting the huge role that
caregivers play in the management of
the disease.
Held on June 30, the event brought
together more than 150 cancer survi-
vors and caregivers to celebrate their
survivorship.
National Cancer Survivors Day was
conceived in 1987 in the United States,
and is generally celebrated on the first
Sunday in June with a myriad of events
happening in countries all over the
world to honor cancer survivors such
as carnivals, art exhibits and other
contests.
At the national-level, whole-day
event this year, activities included
lectures and workshop sessions. Uni-
versiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
psychologist Dr Caryn Chan spoke on
empowering caregivers and improving
relationships between survivors and
caregivers together with Hospital Kuala
Lumpur (HKL) Oncology and Radio-
therapy Department Dr Albert Han.
