and high quality
Fonterra Brands ensures standards are not compromised
in its manufacturing process
BY CAMILIA REZALI
Fonterra Brands Malaysia Sdn
Bhd’s continuous effort to innovate
new dairy products goes through
a stringent process to ensure high
quality.
Its Director of New Product
Development, Scientific and Regulatory
Affairs of Fonterra Brands Malaysia,
Megawati Suzari, said this also added a
value of wholesomeness to the
products.
“To ensure standards for food safety

and quality are not compromised, Fonterra
Brands Malaysia Sdn Bhd incorporates
its delicate manufacturing process with
an essence of Halalan Toyyiban,” said
Megawati.
The company provides halal-certified
New Zealand made dairy, serving more
than 2.7 million glasses of milk to
Malaysians every day. Today, Fonterra
Brands has earned its place as the No 1
dairy supplier for food service in Malaysia
and Singapore.
There are 549 staff in Malaysia
working to deliver high-quality nutrition
through its key brands including Anlene,
Fernleaf, CalciYum, Anchor, Anchor Food
Professionals, Chesdale, Perfect Italiano,
Anmum, Mainland, and New Zealand Milk
Products (NZMP).
Megawati said Fonterra upheld a
stringent halal standard in Malaysia.
It meets the highest halal standards
certified by the Department of Islamic
Development Malaysia (JAKIM) as well
as the relevant recognised foreign Halal
certification bodies and authorities.
Besides respecting halal, the company
also upholds the concept of Toyyiban, a
term mentioned in the Qur’an advising
Muslims to eat “good things”, which
refers to wholesomeness, good quality,
nutritional, safe, hygienic, and healthy
edibles.
She said: “The concept of Halalan
Toyyiban for Fonterra Brands starts from
animal welfare. It is about the types of
food we feed the cows and giving them
a good rest as that is also a part of the
Halalan Toyyiban.
“The process goes beyond what can and
cannot be added, and good manufacturing
practices and hygiene practices.”
Fonterra Brands takes every precaution
to ensure the supply chain meets the
strictest halal standards. The company
ensures all ingredients used in the
manufacturing process are halal-certified.
Non-halal materials are barred from all of
its manufacturing sites.
Even both factories and office located
in Shah Alam and Kota Kemuning in
Selangor are certified halal premises.
“We clean our manufacturing sites in
a way that actively prevents any chance
of contamination from other sources. We
also work with distributors who are halalcompliant
to avoid any contamination of
our consumer brands.
“Our team members are a part of the
committee to look into the Malaysian
standard so that we can bring the
industry’s voice where we look into the
developments of the halal standard,”
shared Megawati.
The company also strives to create
the awareness that halal is not only for
Muslims. The effort to create awareness
starts from its manufacturing centres
where they carry out programmes from a
few years back to educate the workers that
halal is not only applicable to Muslims.
As the company serves halal, highquality
dairy nutrition from New Zealand
to Malaysia and also Singapore consumers
for more than 60 years, it is proven that
Fonterra is a trusted brand.
On top of that, Fonterra runs on a
strategic regional manufacturing plant,
with Susumas powder plant producing
30,000 metric tonnes annually and
Dairymas liquid plant producing 16,000
metric tonnes annually.
QUALITY MATTERS: Products are tested to ensure the highest quality.
