We are almost there but it is still a work in progress. The same can be said for my 2020 new year resolution — a work in progress to continue to sustain my physical and mental health to reach the ripe old age of 90, now that the Tun himself has proven that it is not impossible. Preventing the cause, not fixing the symptoms Over the years, a number of my own classmates and friends very much junior to me have left this earth mainly due to health reasons. statistics show that the number of people who die of old age the last few years have decreased significantly, while death due to non- communicable diseases like diabetes, heart attack, stroke and cancer have become the leading causes. Most of us continue to focus on curing the symp- toms, and not on preventing the root cause. Pills and medication are used as quick solutions to health problems as prevention continues to be down played and ignored. Health education must start in our schools from primary to secondary and into tertiary. Let our chil- dren understand how to become healthier and fitter citizens for the future, and hopefully, earn our first Olympic gold. nutrition as the foundation Proper nutrition education and practice must also be included in the school curriculum besides providing more time for physical exercise. The reform agenda of our education system must also be about our student’s health education . The focus on ‘No smoking’ campaign took one whole year to enforce when it should been be done at the start of the campaign itself in January last year. On the first day of enforcement on Jan 1, thou- sands were fined. Apparently they could not care less about civic consciousness or their own health. If implemented a year ago, imagine how much fines could have been collected. The shock treatment always works (as many who have gone through a heart attack realised too late), and the public must be made to realise that the govern- ment and most of us are serious about smoking and health issues. Now it’s time for the health and education minis- tries to look at integrated programs to enhance ours and our children’s health knowledge, awareness and prevention programs. Finding the cause Remember, the root cause of all diseases is polluted blood leading to poor blood circulation. This is mainly caused by the state of our environment which is experi- encing serious reduction in oxygen content compared to fifty years ago, poor nutrition, stress, lack of sleep and lack of exercise. Research and technology such as electron therapy have helped change and improve our health sustaining and disease prevention programs. In our quest for a better life, it is time we stop sacri- ficing our health for the sake of finding wealth during our younger days which ultimately ends in sacrificing our wealth for the sake of our health during our old age. As the cost of healthcare increases, many will soon be deprived of proper health care in their old age. so we need to focus on prevention and that should be the focus of the health and education ministry in the new decade . — The Health ADI SATRIA, a veteran in marketing communications went through a stressful career path in his early days until he discovered the benefits of exercise and yoga was one of them.
