Assoc Prof Dr Tan Toh Leong is a Senior Lecturer and Consultant Emergency Physician at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre ( UKMMC ) and President and Founder of Malaysian Sepsis Alliance ( MySepsis ), while Dr Nurul Huda Ahmad is a Lecturer and Emergency Physician at Universiti Teknologi MARA ( UiTM ) and vice secretary of MySepsis .

SEPSIS , a life-threatening condition triggered by the body ’ s extreme response to an infection , often leaves survivors grappling with the physical and emotional aftermath .

Surviving sepsis is a testament to the body ’ s resilience , but the road to recovery can be challenging . A comprehensive approach is needed to help individuals recover from sepsis and regain their health .
Many survivors face physical debilitation , organ damage and emotional trauma . The first step to the recovery process is to continue receiving medical care and monitoring involving regular check-ups , blood tests and radiological studies to ensure that the infection is fully eradicated as well as identifying any potential complications .
PHYSICAL , COGNITIVE AND EMOTIONAL REHABILITATION
Sepsis can leave individuals feeling weak and fatigued . Adequate rest is essential during the recovery process . One should gradually increase physical activity to rebuild muscle strength , improve mobility and restore overall physical well-being . It is preferable for this to be done under the guidance of healthcare professionals such as a physiotherapist considering the specific challenges sepsis poses .
Nutrition plays a vital role in recovering from sepsis . Sepsis can deplete the body ’ s nutrient stores , and proper nutrition is essential for rebuilding tissues and supporting overall health . A balanced diet rich in fruits , vegetables , lean proteins and whole grains can support the immune system and aid in healing .

Understanding that emotional healing is integral to overall recovery , and it needs to be emphasised that mental health support as a key component of post-sepsis care .
EDUCATION AND AWARENESS Recovering from sepsis is not only about
physical rehabilitation but also about empowering survivors with knowledge . Education about the potential long-term effects of sepsis , warning signs of complications and strategies for maintaining overall health is crucial . Survivors should work with healthcare providers to develop comprehensive care plans that address immediate and long-term needs .
Taking steps to prevent future infections is important for individuals who have recovered from sepsis . This includes practicing good hygiene , getting recommended vaccinations , and promptly treating any signs of infection .
The long-term recovery journey is often eased by a robust support system . Family , friends and support groups contribute significantly to the emotional well-being of sepsis survivors . Sharing experiences , seeking advice and providing mutual encouragement create a sense of community that helps individuals navigate the challenges of post-sepsis life .
