“In most cases these are inherited from
one or both parents but sometimes the
fault occurs spontaneously and appear
for the first time in a person who has
no other affected family member,” said
Nazirin Ariffin.
She explained that the inherited forms
follow either autosomal dominant or
autosomal recessive inheritance.
“As in the case of autosomal domi-
nance - only one gene instead of a pair
is needed to manifest as an EB. While
in autosomal recessive - you must have
one gene from the mother and the other
gene from the father. So, both are either
carriers or both have EB in order for the
child to have EB as well.
So, you have to have two pair of the
gene to manifest EB.
