T was recently reported that one
of the most crucial issues that
organisations are facing now
is mental health at the work-
place. More than 300 million
people suff er from depression
and anxiety globally according to the

be organising Malaysia’s very first
Mental Health Experiential Confer-
ence (MHEC2019) with support of the
Malaysian Ministry of Health.
Th e three day event will feature
comprehensive and in-depth discus-
sions on mental health awareness,
aiming to cultivate mental wellness
best practices that can be applied in
every organisation.
The challenges
During the soft launch of MHEC2019,
YBhg Dato Hajjah Aishah binti
Mohammad, Chief Executive Offi cer,
Auxilliary Police Unit, Maju Holdings
Sdn Bhd spoke about how despite
Malaysia’s 22.1 million workforce,
latest trends show that approximately
53 percent experience work-related
stress.
“While physical wellness amongst
employees have been a core focus
of many Malaysian companies over
the last 5 years, there is much room
for improvement when it comes to
mental health awareness,” explained
Dato Aishah during the panel session.
Dr Sangeeta Kaur, Chief Engage-
ment Offi cer of Emerging Journey
Asia and Organising Chairman of
MHEC2019 shared with Th e Health
that insurance providers have stated
that the demand for mental health
coverage is lacking in Malaysia. Th is
was the information she received from
the time she approached insurance
agencies about mental health.
It is an interesting thing to note
since statistics denote that one out
three working adults are plagued with
mental health challenges.
“Th ese numbers are based on those
who have come to terms with their
challenges and are openly admitting,
whether wilfully or procedurally.
What about those who have been
conditioned and under peer pressure
