Flourishing under
new management
Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
strives to become the centre for excellence in healthcare through
recent and future development
H
ospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HCTM
UKM), formerly known just as Hospi-
tal Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
(HUKM), has been around since 1997.
The development of the hospital cur-
rently located in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras first came
about through the need for Universiti Kebangsaan
Malaysia (UKM) to have their own teaching hospital.
They had been sharing their teaching space with Hospital
Kuala Lumpur since the 1970s at the time.
The Director of HCTM, Prof Dato Dr Hanafiah
Harunarashid speaks about the hospital’s strive for excel-
lence as it goes under his management in recent years.
“HUKM at the time operates in a different model com-
pared to Hospital Kuala Lumpur where its main core
strength lies in teaching and producing doctors as
compared to HKL, therefore we needed to have our own
healthcare centre to cater to our needs as a university
hospital. In 1997, we achieved that and have been in
operation ever since.”
The change in the name
In 2008, the management decided that the position of
director of the hospital as well as the dean of faculty of
medicine for UKM needed to be helmed by one person.
This, according to Dr Hanafiah, was because HUKM was
much more than a hospital as it has its own centres of
excellence and research facilities.
Prof Dato Dr
Hanafiah looks
to improve every
aspect of HCTM,
starting with
smoother operation
and management
of its day-to-day
procedures.
