Change of guard at Health Ministry

DATUK Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan has been appointed Director General of Health following the retirement of Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah .

Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa in congratulating Dr Muhammad Radzi said his appointment was based on his qualifications and extensive experience in the field of national health services as Deputy Director General of Health ( Research and Technical Support ) at the Ministry of Health Malaysia ( MoH ).
He has served as Head of the Medical Department at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital , Kedah , Chief Medical Coordinator of Kedah State and Head of the Kedah Clinical Research Center . Dr Muhammad Radzi was once appointed as the Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Services and became the chairman of the commissioning of this specialty from 2013 until 2021 .
“ I am confident with the experience , knowledge and expertise as well as his credibility , Datuk Dr Radzi will be able to give his best and be a team mate with me in ensuring that the goals and agenda of the national health reform are fully implemented in line with the Health White Paper that is being developed so that
SITIAWAN-BORN Prof Dr Kee Keh Kooi , is heading a team in Tsinghua University in China to study how gravity and even radiation affect the development of human embryonic stem cells in space . In short , it is understanding how human reproduction will affect humans who will spend a long time in space .
The research is also to find answers as to how the human embryonic stem can differentiate in space . Tsinghua University is regarded as China ’ s top university .
“ It is already happening as Chinese astronauts could stay for a period of time in a station on the moon , astronauts could orbit around the earth , and even ordinary people could travel to space ,’’ he said .
China recently announced its readiness to start its lunar base on the moon within five years , ahead of landing astronauts there in subsequent years .
Dr Kee , a lecturer at the university , has also conducted his research via China ’ s first cargo spacecraft , Tianzhou-1 , which was launched in 2017 .
Its primary duty was to transport fuel and supplies to the orbiting Tiangong 2 space lab . Still , it also hosted innovative scientific experiments that were carried out remotely by Chinese researchers on the ground .

Dr Zaliha also thanked Noor Hisham for his 35 years of service and contribution to public healthcare . “ Dr Noor Hisham recorded several engagements and achievements both locally and globally during the period and his tenure was fully utilised to build a resilient healthcare system for Malaysians to be on par with foreign countries ,” she said at a ceremony to mark his retirement .
“ This ceremony is to honour and to express gratitude for the dedicated service that Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham has given throughout his time with the ministry .
“ I am confident that Tan Sri ’ s service will not end here . In fact , his expertise is still needed for the development of national health and medical practice .
“ On behalf of the MoH , I would like to wish happy retirement and express our deepest appreciation to him for his service , dedication and contribution to the ministry ,” she said in a post on Facebook .
Dr Noor Hisham was instrumental in helping manage the Covid-19 pandemic in the country . He received the 1442H / 2020 Tokoh Maal Hijrah award at the national level .

Sitiawan-born scientist leads space stem cell research

from Parkinson ’ s and Alzheimer ’ s disease and even spinal cord injuries . He lectures undergraduate and postgraduate students at Tsinghua .
He spent decades in the United States , obtaining bachelor ’ s and master ’ s degrees at Iowa State University . This was followed by a PhD at Weill Cornell University . Later , he worked at the University of California , San Francisco , before taking up a three-year stint as a research associate at Stanford University .
The opportunity for him to take a leading role as a principal researcher came when he applied for a post at Tsinghua University after seeing a vacancy advertised in an academic journal in 2009 .
Despite spending over 12 years in Beijing , Dr Kee , who grew up in Johor Baru , makes it a point to visit Malaysia annually , especially during Chinese New Year . His parents , who moved to Johor Baru from Sitiawan in Perak to run a coffee shop , are still operating at Gelang Patah in Johore .
Born in Kampung Remis , a small fishing village , he described himself as a kampung boy . His family , he said , is “ a simple Teochew family ”. Dr Kee is a former student of Foon Yew High School , one of the elite independent schools in Johor .
Dr Kee said he would be happy to conduct talks on his work at Malaysian universities if there are opportunities .

DR KELVIN YII , the Member of Parliament for Bandar Kuching , has been appointed special adviser to Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa . Yii , a doctor by training , confirmed his appointment to FMT .
The DAP Youth chief has been Bandar Kuching MP for two terms and had chaired the Parliamentary Committee on Health during the previous Parliament term .
It is unclear when his appointment took effect . In a Facebook post , Yii said he will be advising Zaliha on

Malaysian doctor wins prestigious global award

DR WOO Yin Ling , a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Universiti Malaya , has won the prestigious 2023 Rachel Pearline Award in recognition of her global contribution to cancer research and practice in low-and middle-income countries .
Rose Foundation , in a recent statement , said Dr Woo had conceptualised and executed Programme ROSE ( Removing Obstacles to cervical ScrEening ), an innovative cervical screening programme that incorporates human papillomavirus ( HPV ) self-sampling .
Dr Woo said it was a great honour for Malaysia , and the recognition was a testament that Malaysians can achieve more if they work together . She said : “ Programme ROSE is the culmination of a huge collaborative effort from many Malaysians who believe in the vision of a cervical cancer-free Malaysia .”
The then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Women , Family , and Community Development , Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail , launched Programme ROSE in January 2019 .
The ROSE Foundation initiated the programme with the aim of making Malaysia one of the first nations in the region to be free of cervical cancer , which is locally the second most common cancer among women under 44 . Every year , one outstanding professional who embodies virtue and eminence in cancer research , practise , and / or training in a low-and middle-income country ( LMIC ) is chosen for the award by the Steering Committee of the Annual Symposium on Global Cancer Research ( ASGCR ).
The National Cancer Institute Centre for Global Health ’ s premier conference is the ASGCR . It brings together experts in the field of global oncology to map out joint initiatives to advance the field and discuss trends in international cancer research and control .
