Estee says that the the key to good eye health
is better awareness and motivation to go for
regular eye checkup.
O
PTOMETRISTS play an important
role in providing primary eye care
services to the public, meaning they
are the fi rst port of call for detect-
ing and managing a range of visual
conditions. So how does one avoid
getting one of these dreaded eye conditions?
Unfortunately, it can sometimes be ‘luck of the
draw’, however, one of the most important factors
to have a pair of healthy eyes is getting a thorough
eye checkup at least once a year. Th is is where it
is vital to select an eye care centre that provides
a higher standard of eye care consultation and
diagnostic equipment.
We speak to Estee, branch manager at Focus
Point Pavilion who brings in more than 10 years of
optical experience and how she has been commit-
ted to continuously deliver the level of eye care her
patients deserve.
A commitment to care
“In order to help out my customers, I choose to work
in a practice which places a high importance on
ensuring their optical equipment is comprehensive
and up-to-date, and I found this trait in Focus Point.
By having a range of modern equipment at
my fingertips allows us to not only increase
efficiency but also helps us to screen and monitor
eye conditions and perform preliminary examina-
tions for baseline measure ments. For instance,
we perform the slit lamp examination to check
for any eye diseases or abnormalities that may
need to be treated.
We also perform a keratometer reading to ensure
the base curve selection during contact lens fi tting.
Every machine has a vital role to play in maintaining
eye health. No doubt with all this equipment, I can
confi dently make recommendations and prescribe
the best vision solutions for my patients,” expresses
Estee.
Educating consumers
on contact lenses
“Th ere is a strong need for Malaysians to have
proper eye examinations and consultations. With
the continuous cross-partnership of the Malaysian
Optical Council (MOC), the Association of Malay-
sian Optometrist (AMO) and Johnson & Johnson
Vision, the Contact Lens Practice Guidelines were
established. I believe this guideline will further help
us deliver a better service to our customers.”
Good customer service is key in any industry, and
Estee is living up to it. “Th ere was a lady who had an
optical emergency, her monthly disposable lens had
popped out of her right eye. Th ere was no way I was

lenses.
going to allow her to drive with just her left contact
lens so I prescribed her a daily disposable trial lens,
with the latest tear-infused technology.
To her amazement, the lens she tried on was so
comfortable. Within a week, she returned to see
me and I’m a strong believer in the power of a good
word. She recommended us to all of her friends.”
Myopia in children: What to do?
Myopia is experiencing an epidemic rise across the
world, most dramatically among younger people.
“I believe this is caused by a certain lifestyle our
younger generation are accustomed to. Many
children nowdays spend their time indoors. What
happens is that their eyeball gets more elongated
when compared to a person who spends time
outdoors.
When the eyeball elongates, the retina becomes
thinner and this results in retinal detachment if
they undergo contact sports. We have to educate
both parents and children from young in order to
prevent ocular eye diseases from occurring.”
With a team of certifi ed optometrists and a
multitude of eye care equipment, it is no wonder
that Focus Point is the leading eye care centre cel-
ebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Among the
instruments that makes them special is that they
have a slit lamp which is used to assess eye health
like dry eyes, which is crucial for contact lens wearer
everywhere. — Th e Health
