optometrist Margaret leong has more than 30 years of experience and believes in the importance
of giving only the best treatment to her patients.
Going the extra mile
T
he gift of sight is so precious and is
something we, as humans, undeniably
take for granted. Because of this, the
passion to ensure our eyesight is in ti p
top shape is adamant in experienced
optometrist Margaret Leong. She man-
ages M&J Optometry at Bangsar Shopping Centre.
With 30 plus years in the optical industry, Leong
has been taking care of over three generation of
patients. “I fi rst worked in an eye hospital and
then a low vision clinic. In 1990, I established
M&J Optometry in Bangsar Shopping Centre,” she
recollects.
“Th e best part of my job is the fact that I get to
meet people. I love kids and it’s especially amazing
to watch them grow. Th ey come in having poor
vision and when you do something right, the par-
ents come back and are thrilled to see how much the
child has changed. From being extremely quiet to
boisterous, like how children ought to be. Some of
my customers are the elderly who are often living
at home alone and by having better vision, they
are free to do what they want,” expresses Margaret
fondly.
Going further for her patients
Margaret’s duties don’t just stop at the optical
centre. “One of my customer’s mother was in her
nineties, had very poor vision, and was bedridden.
I packed all my necessary equipment and went
over to see her at her house. All she wanted to do
was read and watch television. If I went to see a
healthcare specialist, I would want them to treat
me the way they treat a family member or a loved
one. It’s the added pleasure of going home knowing
I did my best and that my patients are taken care of.
What I want is the best for my patients. I have hit
three generations,” she laughs.
“I’m seeing the children brought in by their
parents, the parents become grandparents, and the
children, now adults, bringing their children in.”
Margaret is extremely passionate about her
work and it can be seen when she takes care of
her patients.
Contact lens fi tting
According to Leong, you would never have to worry
about vision loss when your glasses go missing –
plus they give you that added boost of confi dence.
however, to have the best experience possible
with contact lenses, , there is need to go through
some specialised eye tests as well as to do a contact
lens fi tting to assess one’s suitability for contact
lenses. “We don’t off er quick fi xes, there are a few
who come in requesting lenses without a proper
eye check but I make it a point to ensure they fi rst
set an appointment with us fi rst. When I worked
in the eye hospital, I saw a number of completely
preventable eye conditions and damage to the eyes
with excuses such as ‘my friend taught me how to
wear it’,” explains Margaret.
“80 to 85 percent of our perception, learning,
cognition, and activities are mediated through
vision. Th at is why we need to know how to take
good care of it. When it comes to contact lenses,
the utmost important thing is hygiene – disposable
lenses play huge part here. however disappoint-
ingly, you can always fi nd some who stretch daily
disposable lens to a week or two weeks. Our eyes
are a part of our own body, we need to take care of
them to make sure it last a lifetime.”
Smoking and your eyes
We all know what nicotine does to our lungs but
do you know it also takes eff ect on our eyesight?
According to Margaret, smoking destroys the optic
nerve and leads to macular degeneration at an early
age. “It’s more apparent now, younger people are
coming in with this problem. even by the age of
forty, I see signs of macular degeneration already.”
