FOLLOWING the success in 2021 and 2022 , the WSD # LoveYourEyes campaign returns for WSD 2023 with a special focus on eyecare in the workplace . WSD 2023 Programme Chairman Dr Ang Ee Ling says this year ’ s WSD theme ‘ Love Your Eyes at Work ’, aims to bring global attention to the importance of caring for your eyes in workplaces .
“ This includes everything from avoiding accidents in the workplace , which leads to poor vision and reduced productivity , and can be significantly improved when the eye health of workers is a priority .
“ Therefore , WSD is calling on all sectors to help people prioritise their eye health and calling on business leaders to ensure eye care is accessible , inclusive and available to workers everywhere .”

PRIORITISE AND PROTECT EYES AT WORK
Dr Ang explained that eye hazards can take many forms depending on the workplace environment .
“ For example , at construction sites , workers have the risk of sharp object projectiles striking , scraping or penetrating the eye . Workers dealing with chemical substances have the chance of chemicals splashing into the eye .
“ And exposure to infrared lights , such as during welding , will cause flash burns , which is a painful inflammation of the cornea .
“ Not to forget , there ’ s also increased digital screen time at the workplace due to digitisation . This has increased dry eyes and digital eye strain ( DES ) cases .”

According to Dr Ang , studies have found that nine out of 10 eye injuries in the workplace can be prevented if they wear protective eyewear and follow eye care practices during work .
