Th e only thing that could elevate you towards better things is education. So you work hard on your studies, sacrifi ce the things that you would like to do, and become one of the top students at school. Th en the shining opportunity comes along and you are given a choice to become a professional, an expert in your fi eld. It can happen to anyone of us, and it has happened to many of us. For Bee Leng Low, her shining opportunity was to study optom- etry, and her prospect in life blossomed as she became one of the pioneering experts in eye care. A family place Low's practice, BL Optometrist Sdn Bhd is located in Bangsar. Th e eye care centre may not look like a typical retail eyewear store. “We want to focus more on the clinical part of eye care, and therefore you can see that the centre allocates more space for the examina- tion room rather than the showcase area. “Th is is why the eye care centre remains a quaint, humble place where customers may receive the full range of eye examinations. Th e centre has opened its doors in 1991, and Low is proud to be a professional who has taken care of her customers over a generation or two. “One of the best parts of the job is being part of a child's life as they start their eye care journey, watching them grow up and then seeing the next generation as they bring along their own children for an eye check,” Low proudly reminisce. Eye care is more than just getting glasses “My approach to running my practice has always been very simple; I just try to do the best that I can and continue to expand the knowledge I have.” Low says. “I am lucky in a sense that I had the chance to focus on the clinical part of the business from the start, therefore I continue to focus on providing the best eye care services rather than having to think about sales and all.” Primary eye care is very important. Low says that eye examinations should be done properly and if possible, comprehensively. “Th is is to make sure that patients who come in with blurry vision can get tested for cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and problems with the cornea or retina. Th ey need to do the full set of tests to ensure that they don’t have any serious conditions, or if they do, to be identifi ed and treated early,” she explains. Experts in contact lenses Low is passionate about off ering the latest technology and innovations in eye care to her patients. In particular, the contact lens technology that is constantly evolving. “We make a point to not miss any of the symposiums, local and inter- national, to learn new methods in contact lenses and eye care in general,” she explains. “Contact lenses have multiple uses and benefi ts. For one, it is highly suitable for people with signifi cant power so that they won’t need to wear glasses with very thick lenses, it’s great for sports activities, and in some instances, it is actually used as a bandage for post-eye surgery.” Low also mentions the partnership with Johnson & Johnson Vision plays an impor- BL Optometrist provides patients with an extensive range of eye examinations. Th e eye centre is now one of the few to be a contact lens and multifocal specialist. Never neglect your eye health Low advises to always be mindful of our vision. As with any other diseases that would aff ect diff erent parts of our bodies, our eyes can be aff ected just the same. “Don’t just think that when you have any type of vision problem, you can get your power checked and just get glasses or contact lens. You should get a comprehensive eye examination, and on a six-months to one year basis,” she suggests. — Th e Health
