SIGHT FOR YOUR EYES: Before prescribing lenses to the customers, Gooi performs a comprehensive
eye test to ensure comfort and safety for the wearer.
Understanding
comfort in your eye
L
OSING even just a small portion of our sight
can mean that we lose a big portion of beauty
off ered by the world. We use our sight for
almost everything in our life. As an eyeglasses
wearer, some would feel that having an alter-
native to glasses would provide convenience
and greater aesthetics, not to mention the ability to enjoy
the world in a diff erent way.
However, the fi tting requirements needed between
the two types of corrective devices varies signifi cantly.
Being fi tted with contact lens requires an eye care profes-
sional to undertake specialised tests and measurements,
as well as check your lifestyle requirements and vision
needs. Although many people fi rst seek contact lenses
mainly for aesthetic purposes, one should understand
that a proper eye examination and contact lens fi tting
must be conducted by a certifi ed Optometrist before
dawning their fi rst pair of contact lens.
Shindy Gooi, the Optometrist from Paris Miki 1Utama
has this to say, “Th e general public in Malaysia tend to
neglect eye care due to the lack of awareness. Th at is why
I choose to work in an optical shop. I believe I can make
a bigger impact here. Optometrists in optical shops play
an important role to help them detect and refer to eye
specialist if we fi nd any symptoms or signs of any serious
abnormalities.”
Looking out for the general public
It’s important that contact lens users know the proper
handling of their corrective device. “We have customers
walking into our store, unaware of the proper way of
handling lenses which can
lead to infection and other
complications. Some
have even worn them
for more than 10
years and not know

the fundamentals,” says Gooi.
According to her, there’s more than just determining
the prescription power and choosing the colour of the
lenses they are wearing.
Our eyeballs come in diff erent curvature and size.
Th us, it is important to use the right fi tting contact lenses
for your eyes.
Through the eye of Paris Miki
“We'll do a contact lens fi tting to choose the appropri-
ate base curve to fi t the customers and ensure that the
customers know the importance of contact lens care
regime and proper handling of contact lens,” Gooi states.
She continues, "using our machine, we scan for their
curvature and prescription power before moving on to
the eye test. We will then check the eye lids and cornea
before proceeding to fi t them with the most optimum
contact lens."
After care is also an important part of her job. “After
a week, our store representative would call and ask if
they’re comfortable with their lens,” Gooi says. “Our fi rst
ideology is to be customer centric.”
An eye opener
Gooi states: “Buying lenses online is not a good idea. You
need a proper eye test, fi tting assessment and consulta-
tion from a registered Optometrist to ensure proper fi t of
contact lens.” Visit to the Optometrist is worth the eff ort
to ensure you are wearing the right type of lens.
Gooi has always been passionate in helping the public
learn to care better for their eyes while trying to stay glam
and fashionable. — Th e Health
