Understanding astigmatism

• Astigmatism is increasingly common, particularly among younger individuals, and is often related to increased screen time.
• There ' s a notable correlation between myopia and astigmatism, highlighting the need for comprehensive eye care.
• Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing astigmatism and preventing long-term vision challenges.

ASTIGMATISM is a prevalent refractive error characterised by an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, resulting in blurred or distorted vision. This condition can occur alongside other vision issues and may manifest early in life or develop later, influenced by various lifestyle factors.

A comprehensive understanding of astigmatism and its implications is essential for effective eyecare.
Bespoke Premium Centre( by Eyeflex Optometry) Optometrist Ethan Tan shed light on the rising prevalence of astigmatism, particularly among younger demographics, revealing the complex interplay between modern lifestyle factors and eye health.
SURGE IN PREVALENCE
In recent years, Ethan observed a marked increase in astigmatism prevalence, especially among myopia patients. He noted: " The prevalence of astigmatism mostly happens in myopia patients."
Alarmingly, he reported that the onset of myopia is occurring at younger ages, directly correlating with increased screen time and reduced outdoor activity among children.
" As we know, astigmatism is due to our eyeball curvature being irregular," he explained, indicating a growing concern among optometrists regarding the eye health of the youth.
Ethan also highlighted another demographic trend: older patients with astigmatism caused by eyelid proliferation. " We do observation for those elderly persons where the eyelid is dropping," he said, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to mitigate long-term effects.

TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS
When it comes to treating astigmatism, Ethan is clear about his recommendations, particularly for first-time patients.
" For the first astigmatism patient, it would be strongly recommended to start with the soft contact lenses."
These contact lenses provide a practical option, ideally suited for those who need care in managing their vision.
Ethan outlined the benefits of various eyewear options, from eyeglasses to soft toric contact lenses, highlighting their role in

" In terms of maintenance, soft contact lenses are a great starting point, ensuring patients have a positive initial experience that encourages ongoing care."
The evolution of contact lens technology has significantly impacted astigmatism management. " The development of toric contact lenses now covers a wide range of powers."
This advancement has transformed how optometrists approach prescribing contact lenses, affording patients better vision and comfort.
EDUCATING PATIENTS
Ethan emphasised the importance of informing patients about the benefits and limitations of contact lenses compared to traditional glasses." Contact lenses, especially astigmatism contact lenses, can provide better precision," he clarified.
He explained that the positioning of contact lenses on the eye allows for sharper, distortion-free vision, which glasses sometimes cannot achieve due to head movement. Furthermore, as outdoor and sporty lifestyles gain popularity, contacts offer the comfort and convenience that glasses often cannot.
Ethan concluded with a crucial reminder about other factors affecting eye health, mentioning that smoking exposure, particularly during pregnancy, significantly raises the likelihood of astigmatism in children.
His commitment to educating patients extends beyond treatment, fostering a comprehensive understanding of eye health and its broader implications.- The HEALTH
