AS THE world grapples with the ongoing threat of infectious diseases , Malaysia has adopted a proactive and comprehensive strategy to combat Mpox ( Monkeypox ). With cases re-emerging in neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Thailand , Malaysia ’ s health authorities have ramped up efforts to prevent a potential outbreak within its borders .
CONTAINING MPOX
As of Aug 26 , 2024 , Malaysia had recorded 31 suspected Mpox cases , of which 25 were confirmed negative , with six still under observation .
Fortunately , the country has managed to keep its Mpox case count at nine , with the last case reported in November 2023 . Since December of that year , no new cases have emerged - a testament to Malaysia ’ s vigilant and well-coordinated response .
Despite these encouraging numbers , the Ministry of Health ( MoH ) remains on high alert . Concerns over rising cases in neighbouring countries , including Singapore and Thailand , have prompted a tightening of preventive measures , particularly at entry points such as airports .
In line with the World Health Organization ’ s ( WHO ) declaration of Mpox as a global public health emergency of international concern , Malaysia has increased

screening efforts at all entry points .
Collaboration between MoH and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd has been crucial in ensuring stringent monitoring , particularly at Kuala Lumpur International Airport ( KLIA ) Terminal 1 .
The strategy focuses on preventing the cross-border transmission of Mpox and ensuring early detection of suspected cases .
ENHANCED PREPAREDNESS
One of Malaysia ’ s key strategies in tackling Mpox has been its focus on preparedness . The government has activated 10 laboratories capable of conducting Polymerase Chain Reaction ( PCR ) tests , including two private facilities , to ensure swift testing and confirmation of suspected cases .
This has been complemented by the

establishment of a special Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre ( CPRC ) dedicated to monitoring and managing potential outbreaks .
Hospital Sungai Buloh Infectious Diseases Senior Consultant Datuk Dr Suresh Kumar highlighted the importance of these laboratories in detecting Mpox cases .
“ Accurate diagnosis through PCR testing is crucial . Malaysia ’ s capacity of 14 laboratories - eight government and six private – ensures rapid confirmation of suspected cases ,” said Suresh .
This preparedness ensures that any potential outbreak is quickly contained and that treatment can be administered to those in need .
Malaysia has further enhanced its healthcare system ’ s preparedness by regularly distributing circulars to both public and private healthcare providers . It ensures that medical professionals are well-informed and ready to manage any suspected or confirmed Mpox cases .
Hospitals like Sungai Buloh have been equipped with adequate isolation facilities , which play a crucial role in containing the virus and preventing transmission within healthcare settings .
MPOX TREATMENT AND VACCINE
While many Mpox cases are self-limiting and resolved without the need for specific treatment , Malaysia ’ s healthcare providers are prepared to treat more severe cases .
Dr Suresh emphasised that most Mpox infections resolve on their own within
