A farmer normally gets paid for what he grows. The coconut. The rice. The pineapple. The oil palm. Everything else?
For generations, much of what remained after harvesting or processing was exactly that— something left behind. But agriculture is changing.
As industries search for renewable raw materials and alternatives to petroleum-based products, the leftovers from the farm are beginning to acquire something they did not always have.
A price. And that raises an intriguing possibility for Malaysian agriculture. Could farmers eventually harvest the same crop twice? Once for food or commodity value— and a second time from what used to be considered waste?
MONEY IN THE HUSK
Consider the humble coconut.
Malaysia ' s National Biomass Action Plan 2023 – 2030 estimated that coconut production of about 604,428 tonnes generated approximately 271,993 tonnes

of husks and 72,531 tonnes of shells in its baseline assessment.
Together, that is more than 344,000 tonnes of material. Traditionally, coconut husks have relatively straightforward applications. They can be processed into coir fibre and coco peat for agricultural and horticultural use, while shells have applications ranging

from charcoal to activated carbon.
But research into agricultural biomaterials is opening other possibilities. Coconut fibre contains cellulose, which can be processed for applications such as biodegradable films and packaging materials.
That is where the economics become interesting. The coconut itself already has a market.
If its husk and shell can also be sold into viable downstream industries, the economics of growing and processing the crop begin to change. What was previously a disposal problem potentially becomes another product.
IT DOESN ' T STOP WITH COCONUTS
Malaysia has no shortage of agricultural residue. The National Biomass Action Plan estimated about 1.3 million tonnes of rice straw and more than 534,000 tonnes of rice husks from rice production in its baseline assessment.

leaves and stems. Banana cultivation produces pseudostems and leaves. Corn, sugarcane and other crops generate their own residues.
And towering above them all is the oil palm industry, producing vast quantities of fronds, trunks, empty fruit bunches, shells and fibre.
Some already have established uses. Others remain underutilised. The opportunity for Malaysian agriculture is therefore not merely to produce more.
It is to extract more value from what is already being produced. That distinction matters.
Land is finite. Labour is increasingly expensive. Agricultural inputs cost money. Climate variability is adding another layer of uncertainty. Increasing farm income cannot therefore depend indefinitely on planting more hectares or producing greater volumes.
Productivity must increasingly include value per hectare. And that means looking at the entire crop
