THE COMMERCIAL TEST
There is, however, an important reality to confront. A coconut husk sitting beside a farm does not suddenly become valuable just because someone has discovered it can be converted into biodegradable packaging.
There must be a commercially viable use for it. Processing costs matter. Transport costs matter. Technology matters— so do quality and consistency. And ultimately, there must be somebody prepared to buy the finished product.
A 2026 review of Malaysia ' s coconut industry highlighted this challenge precisely. Coconut husks can be repurposed, but their economic use is constrained in some locations by demand and transportation costs.
Husks are bulky. Moving large quantities over long distances can quickly consume whatever value they possess. That illustrates one of the fundamental challenges confronting the emerging biomass economy.
Having enormous quantities of agricultural residue does not automatically translate into an enormous business opportunity. The numbers have to work. And they have to work not merely in a laboratory or pilot project, but commercially.
FARMERS NEED TO SHARE THE VALUE
There is another question Malaysia should address early. If agricultural residue becomes commercially valuable, how much of that value eventually reaches the farmer?
It is entirely possible to build sophisticated downstream industries around biomass while leaving the primary producer with very little additional income.
That would be a missed opportunity. The appeal of the biomass economy should not be limited to cheaper feedstock for manufacturers.
It should also create greater value at farm level. A farmer who previously paid to remove or dispose of agricultural residue could potentially sell it. That additional income may initially be modest.
But multiplied across crops, seasons and thousands of producers, it introduces an important new proposition into Malaysian agriculture: the possibility of earning from something that previously generated little or no return.
This is not simply about saving the environment. It is about changing the economics of farming.
FROM FARMER TO SUPPLIER
For decades, farmers have largely been viewed as suppliers of commodities. Rice farmers produce paddy. Coconut growers sell coconuts. Pineapple growers sell pineapples. Oil-palm smallholders sell fresh fruit bunches.
The emerging bioeconomy provides an opportunity to broaden that definition. The farmer can also become a supplier of industrial raw materials.
Rice straw can potentially feed industries producing bioenergy, biochar, fibre-based materials and other products. Coconut husks can become coir, growing media or biomaterials.
Agricultural fibres can potentially enter packaging, construction and manufacturing supply chains. Some applications will succeed commercially. Others will not. That is normal.
The important point is that the raw material is already there. Malaysia does not have to create it. Farmers are producing it every day.
HARVESTING VALUE TWICE
The National Biomass Action Plan provides Malaysia with a policy framework for developing biomass across agriculture, plantations, forestry, livestock and fisheries.
But policies and laboratory technologies alone will not build an industry.
Farmers need buyers. Processors
need reliable supplies. Investors need commercially proven technologies. Manufacturers need consistent quality. And markets need products that can compete on price and performance.
Connect those dots and something interesting begins to happen. Agricultural residue stops being the end of the production cycle. It becomes the beginning of another.
For Malaysian farmers, particularly smallholders, that could eventually mean earning more without necessarily planting another acre.
The coconut is sold. Then perhaps the husk is sold. The rice is harvested. Then perhaps the straw acquires value. The pineapple goes to market. Its leaves begin another journey.
Agriculture has always been about harvesting what the land produces. The emerging bioeconomy asks farmers and businesses to look a little closer at what remains after that harvest.
Because the next opportunity in Malaysian agriculture may already be lying on the ground- we just haven ' t been harvesting it.

ONE farmer may have coconut husks. Another has rice straw. A third has pineapple leaves.
Individually, the quantities may be too small— and too scattered— to interest a commercial processor. Collectively, however, they could represent a viable supply of raw material.
This is where agricultural cooperatives could have an important role in Malaysia ' s emerging biomass economy.
Rather than expecting individual farmers and smallholders to find buyers, negotiate prices and arrange transportation themselves, cooperatives could aggregate agricultural residue from their members, creating the volumes needed by downstream processors.

Their role could eventually go further.
Collection centres located close to farming clusters could sort, dry, shred or undertake basic processing of biomass before it is transported. That would reduce bulk, improve consistency and, importantly, add value before the material leaves the farming community.
It could also create new rural businesses and jobs. There is another advantage: bargaining power.
If agricultural waste becomes a valuable industrial feedstock, farmers should not merely be the cheapest suppliers at the bottom of the chain. By aggregating supply and negotiating collectively, cooperatives could help ensure that some of the value created

downstream flows back to the people producing the biomass in the first place.
Malaysia already has farmers organised by crop, location and community. The opportunity may therefore not require building an entirely new structure. It may simply require giving an existing one a new business to pursue.
For cooperatives, agricultural waste could become an unusual commodity. For farmers, there is an even simpler way of looking at it.
What one farmer throws away may not be worth very much. What hundreds of farmers put together could be a business.- @ AGROBiz
