THE unrelenting march of human growth and civilisation is killing off the natural world bit by bit . To make room for more buildings and homes , forests must be cut down , habitats devastated , and ecosystems upended . The natural world is diminishing as urban areas grow , which has far-reaching effects .

The destruction of natural areas and biodiversity loss adversely affect human health .
Plants and trees filter the air , absorb excess carbon dioxide , and provide critical habitat for various animals . Our future is in jeopardy because we are destroying the planet ’ s natural defences against climate change in favour of concrete and asphalt .
