Halal certification critical in cosmetics industry
Halal can become a benchmark of accepted conformance and quality in trade dealings with Muslims
INTRODUCTION
COSMETICS are a woman ’ s best weapon to enhance beauty , and every woman has her secrets . There are a lot of cosmetic brands , local or imported . However , not all have “ halal ” status .
As a Muslim , knowing what ingredients are in the product is essential . Using halal products can give many benefits to its consumer . As consumers of cosmetic products , we need to be aware of the ingredients , and Muslims must ensure that the cosmetics are halal .
Apart from the large Muslim population who exhibit high loyalty to halal products , halal cosmetics carry a broader market appeal among non-Muslim consumers , who attribute these products to ethical consumerism and more stringent quality assurance standards .
In addition , for non-Muslims , halal can become a benchmark of accepted conformance and quality in trade dealings with Muslims . In addition , most consumers only focus on halal food but never on daily life products . There are a lot of famous brands of cosmetics imported to Malaysia .
The same goes for local products . A bunch of local cosmetic products keep getting attention from the consumer . Some consumers might not realise the products they use are non-halal .
The production of halal cosmetics does
not only entail critically sourcing ingredients to be considered halal . The same principle follows through the production of cosmetic products . Aside from cosmetic manufacturing requirements ( e . g ., cGMP , ISO , etc .) that manufacturers must adhere to , a halal assurance system must also be in place .
IMPORTANCE OF HALAL CERTIFICATION
As more and more Muslim women demand halal beauty products , more and more personal care and beauty companies are inclined to provide halal beauty and personal care products . A study by Grandview Research shows that the global halal cosmetics market was valued at over US $ 16 billion in 2015 . However , by 2025 , the income generated through the sale of halal cosmetic products is projected to explode to over US $ 50 billion . It ’ s not a new trend , as there has always been a demand for halal personal care and cosmetic products . Yet , the availability of halal-certified products in these verticals is still limited .
Here are a few reasons why halal certification is vital in the cosmetics industry : Muslim buying power in the market Due to the stringent review process for products to receive halal certification , conscious buyers have an additional layer of peace of mind . There ’ s a rise of YouTube , Instagram and other outlets for social media influencers to reach such a broad market . One must consider the share of Muslim buyers in today ’ s beauty market as these Muslim consumers are creating and posting their makeup tips in full-length videos .
